The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has recommended a fresh move to raise the bulk electricity price by nearly 58%, which would bring a huge blow to industrial sector as well as the residential users.
Industrialists and businesses have, however, urged the regulator to reconsider the proposal.
The recommendation of electricity price hike would make the situation worse on top of the already increased cost of fuel price and overall livelihood expenditure.
During a public hearing on Wednesday, the BERC technical committee clarified that the production cost of electricity rose due to the increase in prices of oil and coal used in production facilities.
Business bodies want the BERC to reconsider the decision on the basis of the overall impact that it would bring in the production sector.
In last 12 years, price of electricity has increased a lot. The rise was 118% in wholesale level and 90% in consumer level.
The increase in electricity price would increase the overall cost of livelihood too. In last five years, the living cost of general public has increased at a much higher pace.
This is not the first time that the electricity price is getting a hike. The oil and gas prices, too, are being increased time to time.
