The “March to Gopalganj” was no protest. It was a premeditated assault on Bangladesh’s soul. On July 16 2025, under the watch of Muhammad Yunus’s so-called transitional regime, soldiers opened fire on civilians near the Bangabandhu Mausoleum — turning the birthplace of the nation into a killing field.
Videos showed troops shooting unarmed people as commanders shouted, “Direct shoot kor.” (kill them directly) . Corpses were dragged away; homes of Awami League supporters were raided; even women and children were beaten or detained. Witnesses name Major General Emdadul Islam and Brigade Commander Mizanur Rahman among those directing the operation. Official death tolls are fictional — locals say dozens died.

Behind the gunfire lies a deeper agenda. Since seizing power on August 5 2024, Yunus has dismantled institutions, gagged the judiciary, and ruled by decree. Sovereignty itself is up for sale — from rumored foreign bases on Saint Martin Island to port leases in Chattogram and Mongla. His regime trades blood for backing.
Islamist networks long buried are resurging. Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir now move openly under the NCP’s political cover. Murals of the Liberation War have been destroyed, minorities attacked, and secular voices jailed. Bangladesh’s secular identity is being rewritten into a pro-Pakistan, theocratic script.
Press freedom is gone; journalists covering Gopalganj face abduction or silence. Over 160 people were arrested without charge. Hospitals refused to treat the wounded under military orders. The economy, too, is collapsing — the taka plunging, investors fleeing, remittances drying up.
Yet resistance is rising. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called Yunus a “murderer-fascist” and vowed to reclaim the nation. The Awami League’s “Long March to Jamuna” has reignited protests across Bangladesh.
Gopalganj is now a symbol: of a constitution buried, a people bleeding, and a nation forced to choose — between becoming a militarized Islamist outpost or reclaiming the dream for which it was born.
History is watching.
