China hopes for ‘win-win cooperation’ with US
03:32 PM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (GMT+6)
China says it hopes for “peaceful coexistence” with the US as Trump neared a decisive victory over Harris in the presidential election.
“We will continue to approach and handle China-US relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a regular briefing.
“Our policy toward the United States has been consistent,” she added.
Mao did not comment directly on the possibility of Trump’s re-election but said the “presidential election is an internal affair” of the US.
“We respect the choice of the American people. After the US election results are released and officially announced, we will handle related matters in accordance with usual practice,” she added when asked if Chinese President Xi Jinping would call Trump to congratulate him.

Trump’s road from the courtroom to White House
01:59 PM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (GMT+6)
Press Xpress
As the electoral map increasingly shrinks for Harris, Trump is on the possible highway to success with two swing states, North Carolina, and Georgia voting for the Republican.
Many are pointing out how the electoral map is looking more like 2016, when Trump won, rather than like 2020, when Biden won – even though the 2024 results are still far from decided.
All eyes are also turning to Trump’s four criminal indictments, which are waiting for him even though he paves his path from the courtroom to the White House.

Presidency price tag: Who raised how much money for the election?
09:47 AM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (GMT+6)
According to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) website, more than $2.7 billion of campaign finance money was raised by all the presidential candidates put together for the 2024 elections.
Of these Democrats raised the higher share, standing at a little over $2 billion, while Republicans accounted for around $630 million. The remaining $79 million were raised by others.
Interestingly, former president Joe Biden raised over $1 billion dollars. Kamala Harris raised just a little less than $1 billion, at $998 million.
Donald Trump raised $391 million.
According to data from OpenSecrets, the price tag for US presidential elections has surged by nearly 114% in the last 20 years.
Campaign costs have skyrocketed from $2.57 billion in 2000 to around $5.51 billion in 2024.
In the US election, even American citizens and green card holders can make donations to their preferred presidential candidate or party.
But as election costs continue to rise, candidates face mounting pressure to raise funds, leveraging all available avenues, including small donors, or Political Action Committees. This only goes on to show that campaign finance is no longer a minor component but a decisive factor shaping the race for the White House.

Trump Projected to Win Utah, Montana; Harris Takes Rhode Island, Colorado
09:23 AM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (GMT+6)
CBS News has projected several key wins in the presidential race. Donald Trump is expected to win Montana, Utah, and Louisiana, while Kamala Harris is projected to carry Colorado and Rhode Island. The race in Nevada remains highly competitive, rated a toss-up by CBS News. Polls closed at 10 p.m. ET in Montana, Utah, and Nevada, with particular attention on Nevada due to its battleground status.
Montana, with its four electoral votes, adds to Trump’s tally, along with Utah and Louisiana, which contribute six and eight electoral votes, respectively. According to CBS News, Trump’s win in Utah reflects the state’s history as a Republican stronghold, even though some voters, particularly members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, have shown reservations about his style. Utah, home to about 3.4 million people and approximately 50% Latter-day Saints, has not elected a Democratic presidential candidate since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. The Associated Press confirmed Trump’s victory in Utah at 10:00 p.m. ET.
In Montana, Trump continues his winning streak in the state, marking his third consecutive victory there. Montana’s four electoral votes now include an additional seat gained in the 2020 census. Historically, Montana has leaned Republican in presidential elections, siding with the GOP nominee in all but one race since 1968. The Associated Press called Montana for Trump at 10:00 p.m. ET.
On the Democratic side, CBS News has projected that Harris will take Illinois and its 19 electoral votes, along with New York and its substantial 28 electoral votes. Harris is also expected to secure Rhode Island and its four electoral votes. The AP has called Colorado for the Democratic Party.

What Happens if Harris and Trump End in a Tie?
07:52 AM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (GMT+6)
There are three scenarios where Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump could both reach 269 electoral votes, resulting in a tie.
- Scenario 1: Democrats win Georgia (16), Arizona (11), Wisconsin (10), and Nevada (6); Republicans win Pennsylvania (19), North Carolina (16), and Michigan (15).
- Scenario 2: Democrats win Georgia (16), North Carolina (16), and Arizona (11); Republicans win Pennsylvania (19), Michigan (15), Wisconsin (10), and Nevada (6).
- Scenario 3: Democrats win North Carolina (16), Arizona (11), Wisconsin (10), and Nevada (6); Republicans win Pennsylvania (19), Georgia (16), and Michigan (15).
If a tie occurs, the U.S. House of Representatives would conduct a contingent election to decide the winner, with each state delegation casting one vote. A candidate must secure 26 votes to win. The U.S. Senate would then choose the vice president, requiring a majority of 51 votes.

Trump highlighted Philadelphia, traditionally a Democratic stronghold, as key to his strategy, calling it “the big question” in securing Pennsylvania’s electoral votes.

07:00 AM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (GMT+6)
Democracy and the economy topped voter concerns in the 2024 US elections, according to early exit polls. Over a third of voters cited democracy as their primary issue, with the economy following closely behind. These early results may shift as additional data comes in.
Partisan divisions were clear: 60% of Harris supporters prioritized democracy, while only 10% of Trump supporters felt the same. Conversely, half of Trump voters cited the economy as their main concern.
Voters from both sides expressed worry about threats to democracy and potential election-related violence, with nearly 70% voicing concern. Confidence in the election’s fairness was higher among Harris supporters, while Trump voters were divided.

Republican Jim Justice to Replace Manchin in Senate
06:48 AM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (GMT+6)
Democrats faced a setback earlier this year when Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced his departure from the party and confirmed he would not seek re-election.
Manchin’s exit, which followed years of criticism over his ties to the coal industry, further strained the Democrats’ already narrow majority in the Senate.
The Associated Press has projected that Republican Governor Jim Justice will take Manchin’s seat, after defeating Democrat Glenn Elliott, a lawyer and former mayor of Wheeling, who was endorsed by Manchin. Justice’s victory had been anticipated well before the election results came in.

Kentucky, Indiana Called for Trump, Vermont for Harris as Initial Election Results Come In
06:27 AM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (GMT+6)
Initial projections indicate former President Donald Trump has won Kentucky and Indiana, securing 8 and 11 electoral votes, respectively. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris is projected to win Vermont, adding 3 electoral votes to the Democratic tally.
These results show Trump’s continued support in historically conservative states, while Harris maintains strong Democratic support in Vermont. In key swing states, preliminary exit polls reveal that Harris is largely holding onto Biden’s 2020 coalition, particularly among young and Black voters. However, Trump has gained ground among independents in Georgia, marking a shift from 2020 when Biden led this group.
Exit polls, which combine data from Election Day and early absentee voters, offer early insights into voter demographics. While they serve as preliminary indicators, final vote counts will ultimately confirm these projections.
How Will the U.S. Election Impact the Gold Prices and Stock Market?
05:27 AM Wednesday, November 6, 2024 (GMT+6)
As Americans vote, markets are monitoring potential effects on gold and stock prices due to anticipated policy changes and election uncertainty. Gold, a traditional safe-haven asset, has held steady but could see increased demand if results remain uncertain. Oxford Economics notes that a Trump victory may bring higher Treasury yields and inflation due to tariff policies, which could pressure gold prices lower, though geopolitical risks could offset this impact.
Meanwhile, U.S. stocks rose on election day, but volatility is expected in the days ahead, especially if results are delayed. The election outcome will shape policies on trade, taxation, and regulation, which could greatly impact market sectors depending on whether the winner controls Congress. Investors are preparing for varied scenarios with tight margins in Congressional races

Philadelphia has seen exceptionally high voter turnout this Election Day, with local Democratic Party Chairman Bob Brady reporting 60% turnout as of 3:30 p.m. ET, with more than four hours remaining for voters to cast their ballots.
“We are expecting to surpass 2020’s turnout of 65%,” said Brady, a former congressman, in an interview with Fox News. “Our goal is to reach 70%, potentially even hitting 80%.” According to Brady, African American, female, and Puerto Rican voter participation has been especially robust, reflecting engagement levels that could approach those seen during former President Obama’s campaigns.
This heightened turnout could be pivotal in influencing results in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.

Similarly, in Pennsylvania, a judge has extended voting hours in Laflin Borough until 9:30 p.m. after a late start prevented some voters from casting ballots earlier in the day.
According to WNEP, the Laflin polling station was unstaffed when it was due to open at 7:30 a.m., leading to a delayed first ballot at 8:30 a.m. Voters reported waiting nearly two hours.
Both states are critical battlegrounds in the 2024 election, with Georgia and Pennsylvania seen as essential wins for both parties.

Why Harris chose Howard University for her election night HQ
10:47 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
When Kamala Harris arrived as a freshman at Howard University 42 years ago, she was immediately drawn to the area of campus known as the Yard.
It was her favorite place to hang out, she would later write in her memoir, where on any given day she could look around and see the entire spectrum of the student body: “Groups of students might be in a circle of laughter, or locked in deep discussion. A columnist for The Hilltop, the school newspaper, with the star of the football team. A gospel choir singer with the president of the math club.”
After a sprint-like campaign that has brought her to the precipice of history, Harris will return to the Yard this week, where her campaign is setting up its Election Night headquarters.
Whether it’s for a victory speech or a concession remains to be seen. But the choice of Howard’s Yard amounts to a symbolic nod to her time at the university, which she has described as a formative experience.
It’s where she ran her first campaign for freshman class representative, against an opponent — Shelley Young — she’s described as the toughest rival she’d ever faced.
She was a debater who carried a briefcase around campus instead of a backpack. She chaired the economics society. And perhaps most notably, she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, the historic Black sorority founded at Howard in 1908.
“To go back tonight to Howard University, my beloved alma mater and be able to hopefully, you know, recognize this the day for what it is, is really it’s full circle for me,” she said during a radio interview Tuesday morning.
Half of Nevada Voters Have Already Cast Their Ballots
10:45 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
In Nevada, early voting numbers reveal that Republicans are outpacing Democrats by tens of thousands of votes—an unusual shift, as Democrats typically lead in early voting here.
Why the change? Donald Trump has encouraged his supporters to vote early this time around, reversing his 2020 message to vote only on Election Day.
Democrats hope this early turnout merely “cannibalizes” the Election Day vote, meaning these early voters won’t show up again on Tuesday. However, there’s a risk this signals a more energized Republican base, which could pose serious challenges for Democrats in Nevada if the trend continues.
Voting hours extended in Pennsylvania county after software glitch
10:35 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
A Pennsylvania state judge ordered polls to remain open for two extra hours, until 10pm local time, in Cambria County, after a software malfunction affected ballot-scanning machines.
County officials said the problem caused some voter confusion, with some leaving without casting a ballot, as well as long lines at some locations.
Officials stressed that no one was being turned away from the polls and that all ballots would be counted.
Who has endorsed Harris?
10:25 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Here are a few of the celebrities who have thrown their support behind the Democratic candidate:
Oprah Winfrey: The talk show host and television producer shared the stage with Harris at an event called “Unite for America” in September. She spoke again at a Harris rally in Philadelphia on Monday.
Beyonce: The singer spoke at a Harris rally in her hometown of Houston, Texas, in October.
Taylor Swift: The pop star announced her endorsement of Harris on social media during the September presidential debate.
Eminem: In late October, the rapper introduced Harris at a rally in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan.
LeBron James: The basketball player and four-time NBA champion posted a video on Wednesday on X in support of Harris in which he wrote, “When I think about my kids and my family and how they will grow up, the choice is clear to me.
VOTE KAMALA HARRIS!!!”
Bruce Springsteen: In October, the rock singer-songwriter performed at a Harris rally in Philadelphia.

Vice President Kamala Harris is urging Americans to head to the polls, emphasizing the importance of voter participation in a series of radio interviews today. Speaking on Atlanta’s WVEE-FM, Harris stated, “We’ve got to get it done. Today is voting day, and people need to get out and be active.”
When asked on Georgia’s Big Tigger Morning Show about the potential historic significance of her presidency, Harris said she is focused on the “task in front of me” and on addressing the needs of Americans through policy, according to CBS News.
Harris also noted her connection to Howard University, the historically Black college she attended, sharing that hosting her election night party there would be a “full circle” moment. She reflected on her first campaign for freshman class representative at Howard and mentioned that she would be joined by family members staying with her.
Who has endorsed Donald Trump?
10:00 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Here are a few of the celebrities who have thrown their support behind the Republican candidate:
Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and owner of Tesla and the social media platform X, has established a $1m-a-day voter sweepstakes for Trump supporters in swing states.
Joe Rogan, the podcaster, comedian and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) commentator who recently interviewed Trump for almost three hours, announced on Monday that he would endorse Trump.
Hulk Hogan, a former wrestler, attended the Republican National Convention (RNC) in June and has since appeared at rallies.
Kid Rock, an American singer-songwriter and rapper, also performed at the RNC.
Ye, the rapper, producer and fashion designer formerly known as Kanye West, also endorsed Trump in the 2016 elections.
Dr Phil, the television personality and author, spoke at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally.
Russell Brand, the controversial comedian, announced his support for Trump on his podcast in June.
Buzz Aldrin, the second person to ever walk on the moon, has cited Trump’s policies on space exploration as a reason for his endorsement.
'I hear we're doing very well': Trump casts ballot with wife Melania
09:57 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Donald Trump has arrived to vote in Palm Beach near his home, alongside his wife, Melania.
Wearing a bright red MAGA hat, the former president stops to speak to the media, and says: “I have been very honoured to find out the lines are long, the conservative lines, the Republican lines are very long.”
He goes on to say that they arrived back in Florida “very late last night” after “four incredible rallies”, and adds: “I hear we’re doing very well.”
Asked by a reporter how he will reach out to voters opposed to him, Mr Trump says they “want to bring everybody in” and “will be very inclusive”.
“We have a great country, but we have a country that’s in trouble. It’s in big trouble in many ways, and we have to straighten it out,” he says.
Mr Trump says he feels “very confident” about his chances in this election, saying he went into election day today “with a very big lead”.
“It looks like Republicans have shown up in force, so we’ll see how it turns out,” he says, adding that of the three presidential campaigns, this was the best one they’ve run.
The former president also hits out at the fact that we may not know the result of the election tonight, saying it should be “over by 10pm”.
Singling out Pennsylvania, he says it is “an absolute outrage” that it could take two or three days for the result to be known.
He says he will be watching the results come in from his home in Mar-a-Lago, and asserts that he has a “substantial lead”.
Asked if he is telling his supporters there should be no violence around the election result, he says: “I don’t have to tell them that. Of course there’ll be no violence. My supporters are not violent people.”
He also says that he “would think” that this is his final presidential campaign.
From Election Day to Inauguration Day
09:47 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Election Day is finally here, but it’s just one of the many key dates in this hard-fought presidential race.
Check out this timeline of events that will take place from Election Day to Inauguration Day:
• November 5: Election Day
• November ?: It could take days for the result to be determined.
• November 26: Trump is due to be sentenced in a Manhattan hush money case in which he was found guilty of falsifying documents to cover up payments to silence an adult film star about an alleged sexual encounter.
• December 17: Electors, who together form the Electoral College, meet in their respective states and the District of Columbia to select the president and vice president.
• December 25: The electoral votes must be received by this date by the president of the Senate – a role held by the vice president, currently Harris – and the archivist.
• January 6: The vice president presides over the Electoral College vote count during a joint session of Congress, announces the results and declares who has been elected.
• January 20: The president-elect and vice president-elect take their respective oaths of office during a swearing-in ceremony
History in the Making: The High-Stakes 2024 Election
09:27 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
This U.S. presidential election promises to be historic no matter who wins.
If Kamala Harris prevails, she would break multiple barriers as the first woman and the first Black and South Asian American to serve as president in the nation’s 248-year history. While her candidacy is undeniably historic, Harris has focused less on her identity and more on her vision for “all Americans,” aiming to unite a broad coalition.
On the other hand, a Trump victory would mark its own kind of milestone. At 78, Trump would become the first person ever convicted of a felony to be elected president, having been found guilty of 34 counts in a New York case just months ago. He’d also be the first to serve non-consecutive terms in over a century.
Trump, still facing additional felony charges, claims these prosecutions are part of a politically motivated campaign against him, making his path to a potential second term both unprecedented and polarizing.
In this election, the stakes aren’t just about policies—they’re about making history.
If you’re just joining us
08:27 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Let’s bring you up to speed:
• Polls are open in more than three dozen states across the eastern and central United States, where voters are casting their ballots for the next president.
• Alongside the presidential race, hundreds of congressional seats are at stake, which will shape the party balance in the House and Senate, and thousands of local offices are also on the line. In 10 states, referendums on abortion rights are on the ballot.
• Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump are polling neck and neck in the seven swing states likely to decide the presidential race, which experts say could go either way.
• The economy, democracy, national security, immigration, education and healthcare are among voters’ top concerns as they head to the polls.
Where are Trump and Harris?
07:27 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Trump spent the very early hours of Election Day in Michigan, where he wrapped up a late-night rally in Grand Rapids.
The Republican candidate plans to spend the day in Florida, where he is expected to vote in person – despite previously saying he would vote early. He’s scheduled to hold a campaign watch party in Palm Beach on Tuesday night.
Harris plans to attend an election night party at Howard University in Washington, a historically Black university where she graduated with a degree in economics and political science in 1986 and was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
Aside from Howard, she has no public schedule announced for Election Day. Harris said on Sunday she had “just filled out” her mail-in ballot and it was “on its way to California”.
‘Sense of urgency’ shown by both campaigns in Wisconsin
07:17 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Sauk County, just northwest of the state capital of Madison, is a bellwether because, in the last four presidential elections, this county was one of just two that predicted correctly the winners – not only for the state but for the country.
In 2020, Biden won here by just 292 votes. In 2016, Trump won by 109.
We’re all watching to see how Wisconsin votes with its 10 Electoral College votes. It’s part of this blue wall that Harris is trying to shore up after it came back to support Biden in 2020.
The turnout here across the state has shown that enthusiasm – one and a half million early voters in Wisconsin – which is on track to make history.
The polling here shows a tie between Harris and Trump. Harris had a slightly larger lead going into these last few days of the campaign, although this is still within the margin of error.
And we’ve seen that urgency behind both campaigns crisscrossing the state of Wisconsin along with their surrogates.
Both vice presidential candidates were here in Wisconsin campaigning on Monday, trying to deliver messages targeted at what they hope will be their voting coalitions.
The Democrats are trying to turn out suburban voters, women in particular, who may be turned off by Trump and his messaging on abortion. Republicans are targeting the rural areas and also trying to make inroads to young men who are supporting Trump, particularly Black young men and Latinos who have shown more favor for him than they did in the past election.
JD Vance Votes in Ohio
06:57 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Republican Vice-Presidential nominee JD Vance cast his ballot in person this morning at his polling location in Cincinnati.
Accompanied by his wife, Usha, and their children, the senator arrived at St. Anthony of Padua Church in high spirits.
Donald Trump expected to vote in person in Florida before Palm Beach watch party
06:57 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Palm Beach residents who head to their polling places on Tuesday will be joined by a man whose name is on the ballot: Former President Donald Trump is expected to vote in person on the island on Election Day.
This will mark the third time Trump, the Republican nominee facing Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris for the White House, has cast a ballot for himself in a General Election presidential race. When he did so in 2020 — that year, he voted early at the Palm Beach County Library System’s Main Library on Summit Boulevard — he became the first incumbent president to vote in person as a Florida resident.
Since declaring Palm Beach as his permanent residence in late 2019, Trump has voted at several sites in Palm Beach County, and his ballots in primaries, municipal and state elections, and the general election have been cast early, by mail and on Election Day.
Attorneys general issue statement urging ‘peaceful transfer of power’
06:47 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
A bipartisan coalition of 51 attorneys general across US states and territories released a statement on Tuesday urging people to remain peaceful and pre-emptively condemning “any acts of violence related to the results”.
A peaceful transfer of power is the highest testament to the rule of law, a tradition that stands at the heart of our nation’s stability. As Attorneys General, we affirm our commitment to protect our communities and uphold the democratic principles we serve.
We call upon every American to vote, participate in civil discourse and, above all, respect the integrity of the democratic process,” they wrote. “Violence has no place in the democratic process; we will exercise our authority to enforce the law against any illegal acts that threaten it.”
Voting Underway in Arkansas
06:46 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Polls are now open in Arkansas, increasing the number of states participating in the election to nearly 30. Arkansas has six electoral votes, a modest number compared to larger states like California, which has 54 electoral votes, and New York, with 28.
The number of electoral votes allocated to each state is largely determined by its population size. Additionally, several other states, including Mississippi and North Dakota, began voting about half an hour ago.
Common Challenges at Polling Locations on Election Day
06:45 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
While most polling locations operate smoothly in the US, Election Day often brings a series of recurring issues. This year, severe weather is a particular concern, especially following recent hurricanes in the Southeast. Adverse weather conditions, such as the blizzard that impacted turnout in Iowa during the 2024 Republican primaries, have historically hindered voting access and turnout, as shown in multiple studies. Environmental impacts can especially deter less motivated voters.
Another persistent challenge is the presence of protests near polling locations. Despite state laws prohibiting political activity within a certain distance of voting sites, protests outside remain a growing issue. During the 2020 election, demonstrators gathered outside polling places, including Trump supporters in Virginia and, in some instances, armed protestors stationed near vote-counting sites. Election officials continue to monitor these activities closely to ensure a safe and orderly voting environment.

Will Americans Face Delays in Election Day Vote Counting?
06:00 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Based on previous elections, Americans should expect delays in counting ballots in some states. Although the 2024 election takes place on November 5, it may take days or even weeks for each state to certify results.
Arizona, for instance, typically experiences delays, and this year it added a new step in which ballot counters must hand-count ballot envelopes dropped in boxes before full tabulation, likely extending the process further.
However, several swing states are implementing changes to speed up the count. In Nevada, ballot counting can now start on Election Day morning, instead of waiting until early voting ends. Michigan will begin processing ballots eight days before Election Day to expedite certification.
Control of US Congress at stake
05:45 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
The 2024 election could dramatically reshape Congress, with both chambers potentially changing hands while maintaining a split between Republican and Democratic control. The results will significantly impact the next president’s ability to advance their agenda through 2026.
According to nonpartisan forecasts, Republicans are well-positioned to retake the Senate from its current narrow Democratic control of 51-49. Meanwhile, Democrats need just four additional seats to wrest the House of Representatives from Republican control.
“It’s incredibly close,” says Erin Covey of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. The fate of Congress rests on a remarkably small number of races – seven key Senate contests and approximately 40 competitive House seats will likely determine which party holds power in each chamber.
'Make your voices heard' and 'Make America great again' - Harris and Trump share voter
04:29 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Kamala Harris has shared her first post on X since US polls opened just over an hour ago.
“America, this is the moment to make your voices heard,” the current vice-president says.

What Are Trump and Harris's Main Election Arguments?
04:29 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, has framed herself as a forward-looking leader, contrasting Republican Donald Trump as a source of “chaos.” She has aligned with many of Joe Biden’s policies on issues like the economy, the Gaza conflict, immigration, and abortion rights.
Harris’s platform includes tax cuts for middle-income voters and significant new investments in childcare and healthcare. While she has gained some support on economic issues, inflation remains a point of concern, especially around food and housing costs.
Trump, meanwhile, argues that Americans fared better economically under his administration. His campaign focuses on tariffs, tax cuts, and reducing federal spending, which he claims will curb inflation. Trump also pledges to reinstate his strict immigration policies, aiming to control the record flow of migrants and conduct mass deportations.
On foreign policy, Trump promotes his “America First” agenda, prioritizing domestic interests and avoiding foreign conflicts.
How Voting Works in the US Election
03:45 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
Millions of Americans have already cast their votes, either early in person or by mail, while many others will vote today at polling stations across the country.
Here’s a look at the types of voting systems in use:
• Paper Ballots: Most US voters use hand-marked paper ballots, where they fill in an oval or square next to their chosen candidate’s name.
• Ballot Marking Devices (BMDs): About 25% of voters live in areas that use digital devices to mark their votes. These devices generate a paper record for verification.
• Direct Recording Electronic (DRE) Systems: In a few jurisdictions, voters use DRE machines to cast votes directly into the computer system by pressing a button or touchscreen.
Vote Counting and the Electoral College
Unlike many countries, there is no federal vote-counting system in the US. Instead, each state manages its own vote count.
The US president is not necessarily elected by the popular vote. Instead, presidential candidates aim to win a majority of 538 Electoral College votes, awarded by winning contests in each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. To secure the presidency, a candidate must win at least 270 electoral votes.
Most states award all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the most votes in that state. However, a few states allow electors to vote independently of the popular vote outcome.
Campaigns primarily target a handful of swing states where the race is competitive and could go either way. These states are crucial for either candidate to reach 270 electoral votes and win the election.
New Hampshire hamlet tied in first US Election Day votes
02:45 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
In a symbolic start to the 2024 US Election Day, the tiny New Hampshire community of Dixville Notch recorded a 3-3 tie between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. The result reflects the neck-and-neck race shown in national polls.
Continuing its decades-old tradition of casting the nation’s first Election Day votes at midnight, this small northeastern hamlet once again drew attention to its unique role in American democracy. Under New Hampshire law, communities with fewer than 100 residents can open their polls at midnight and close them once all registered voters have cast their ballots.
The split result marks a departure from the hamlet’s 2020 vote, when Joe Biden achieved a rare unanimous victory – only the second candidate to do so since Dixville Notch began its midnight voting tradition in 1960.
Polls open in Vermont, kicking off US election day
02:25 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
It’s just turned 05:00 on the East Coast of America, meaning polls have opened in Vermont and US election day is well and truly under way.
Over the next few hours, more states will follow suit as America chooses its next president. Next up, we’ll see polls open in states including New York and Virginia – we’ll tell you when that happens.
As Americans prepare to vote, businesses board up
02:15 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
In Washington DC, the home of US politics, many businesses have boarded up their windows in preparation for possible unrest on or after election day.
Hundreds of National Guardsmen are also on standby in the American capital, as well as in other states – including Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, North Carolina and New Mexico.
Metal fences began to be erected outside the White House from as early as the beginning of October – the same has since happened near other DC buildings, including the Capitol.
When do the polls open?
02:05 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
In-person voting began at midnight local time in the small New Hampshire town of Dixville Notch and ends at 7 p.m. in the Hawaiian-Aleutian time zone, already the next day back east.
Most polling places open around 7 a.m. or 8 a.m. ET.
Some voters in Vermont can vote starting at 5 a.m. ET, but the opening hours vary depending on the location.

What is the Electoral College and How Does it Work?
01:05 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
The Electoral College is the system used to count, process, and verify votes in U.S. presidential elections, held every four years. It consists of a group of electors from each state who meet to cast their official votes for president and vice president after Election Night, with the final count sent to Congress for verification. There are 538 electors in total, representing the 50 states and Washington, D.C.; however, U.S. territories like Puerto Rico and American Samoa do not have representation in the Electoral College.
Created by Alexander Hamilton in Federalist No. 68, the Electoral College aims to balance the influence of states with smaller populations against those with larger ones. Each state’s number of electoral votes is based on its representation in Congress (the sum of its Senators and Representatives). Washington, D.C., has three electoral votes to ensure its representation as well.
Latest Polling Data from Swing States
12:55 PM Tuesday, November 5, 2024 (GST)
With Election Day fast approaching, let’s review the latest polling data from all seven swing states.
As has been the trend in recent weeks, the leads in each state remain razor-thin, and with a margin of error of three to four percentage points, it’s too close to call in most cases.
In the latest check, Trump held slight leads in Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, and Arizona. Harris showed small leads in Wisconsin and Michigan, while Pennsylvania remained tied between the two candidates.
Trump, Harris Wrap Up Campaigns on Eve of Election Day
With Election Day just hours away, Trump and Harris have concluded their campaigns in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Here’s a rundown of the final push:
• Trump’s Grand Rapids Rally: In a spirited event in Grand Rapids, Michigan — where he also ended his 2016 and 2020 campaigns — Trump predicted a sweeping victory, alongside repeated claims of voter fraud. He also referenced surviving an assassination attempt this year, suggesting divine intervention to fulfill a second term.
• Reaching Out to Key Voters: Trump made another appeal to Michigan’s Muslim and Arab voters, many of whom are disillusioned by Harris’s stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza.
• Harris Rallies in Pennsylvania: Harris spoke to supporters at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, stressing the importance of Pennsylvania to her path to victory. She highlighted her plans to lower costs of living and make housing and childcare more accessible for working families.
• A Tight Race: Harris warned supporters against complacency, emphasizing the potential for a historically close election: “Every single vote matters,” she said.
• Polls Show a Close Race: The latest national poll by FiveThirtyEight shows Harris with a narrow lead at 48.1% over Trump’s 46.8%.
With polls opening soon, both campaigns are gearing up for what could be one of the most competitive elections in recent U.S. history.
