In a groundbreaking development, Sichuan University (SCU) in Chengdu has climbed to the 11th position globally in the latest Nature Index rankings, surpassing prestigious institutions such as Stanford University, MIT, Oxford, and the University of Tokyo. This achievement reflects SCU’s remarkable strides in high-quality research between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024.
SCU’s ascent is part of a larger trend, with several Chinese universities outperforming global powerhouses like MIT, Stanford, Caltech, and Oxford in scientific research. The Nature Index, published by the renowned journal Nature, evaluates institutions based on their contributions to leading scientific publications. SCU has excelled in chemistry, securing the ninth spot worldwide, with notable work in organic chemistry, chemical engineering, materials engineering, macromolecular chemistry, and materials chemistry.
While Harvard University continues to lead the rankings, Chinese institutions dominate most of the top ten spots, underscoring a significant shift in global research dynamics. The Nature Index assesses five key disciplines: biological sciences, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, health sciences, and physical sciences.
SCU’s Rapid Rise
In 2023, SCU was ranked 26th globally, behind institutions like the University of Michigan and the University of California, San Diego. Its swift rise is attributed to strategic initiatives aimed at bolstering research capabilities and attracting global talent.
Between 2018 and 2024, SCU expanded its faculty of leading academics from 325 to 810. The university also actively recruited international talent, hosting forums for young researchers since 2017 and establishing a dedicated working group in mid-2023 to attract overseas experts. These efforts have resulted in over 200 foreign-trained researchers joining SCU.
Metrics of Success
The Nature Index ranks institutions using two metrics: ‘count’ and ‘share.’ The count metric assigns one point for each publication involving the institution, while share divides the point based on the number of contributing authors. This approach highlights institutions making substantial contributions to collaborative research.

A Shift in Global Research Leadership
SCU’s success reflects a broader trend of China emerging as a leader in high-quality scientific research. Recent reports indicate that China has surpassed the U.S. in the number of top-tier science and technology researchers, further cementing its position as a global research powerhouse.
As Sichuan University continues to ascend in the global academic rankings, it not only marks a significant milestone for the institution but also signals a transformative era in international research and innovation.
