Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public meeting in Rohru, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday said his party is fighting to save the people of the country and the Constitution and will fill 30 lakh government vacancies if it is voted to power in the Lok Sabha elections.
He alleged that China has encroached on India’s land and is constructing houses and roads but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is silent. “Where is the 56-inch chest,” Kharge asked, taking a dig at the prime minister in his address at a rally in Himachal Pradesh’s Rohru.
Kharge said, “We fought against Pakistan and got independence for Bangladesh. China encroached on our land and is constructing houses and roads and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is silent. Where is the 56-inch chest?
The Congress chief also hit out at the Centre for allegedly not providing aid to the Himachal Pradesh government in the aftermath of the 2023 floods.
Former cop, counter-insurgency expert enters Lok Sabha fight
May 25, 2024. 3:53PM (GMT+6)
Campaigning in the Buxar constituency of Bihar, where PM Modi is addressing a rally today, is also young candidate Anand Mishra, marking his debut into politics with the 18th Lok Sabha polls.
Mishra, a 2011-batch distinguished IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, resigned earlier this year from the esteemed Indian Police Service (IPS) to enter politics.
Known to be a counter-insurgency expert and “Assam’s Singham” after the popular Ajay Devgn starrer Bollywood movie Singham, Mishra has a significant following on social media.
However, he wasn’t successful in gaining a BJP ticket from his home constituency in Bihar and is therefore, fighting the 1 June polls as an independent candidate.
His entry has turned the contest for Buxar interesting, where BJP’s Mithilesh Tiwari is facing off with RJD’s Sudhakar Singh.
“There is nothing like assurance in politics,” he told the Times of India.
His intensive campaigns have focused on youth, honesty, and educated people such as him entering into grassroots level of politics.
Prior to Mishra, another IPS officer and former Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey from Buxar faced a similar setback. Denied tickets twice to contest polls, he abandoned the idea of becoming a politician and instead became a religious preacher, which he has been doing for about last four years, reports TOI.

PM Modi holds rallies in Bihar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing three back-to-back rallies in favour of NDA candidates in the eastern state of Bihar as some of its constituencies go to polls today.
Eight seats of Bihar are voting today as PM Modi addresses public meetings in Patliputra, Karakat, and Buxar Lok Sabha constituencies, which will go to vote on 1 June, the last day and last phase of India’s weeks-long Lok Sabha elections.
This is the PM’s 9th visit to Bihar since the announcement of the parliamentary elections.
He promised free electricity for everyone in the country and assured quota reservation to voters from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Class (OBC). This was during his first address of the day from Bikram in Patliputra constituency from where BJP leader and two-time sitting MP Ram Kripal Yadav is contesting election against Misa Bharti, daughter of Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.
In his second address from Dehri town in Karakat constituency in the afternoon, Modi has appealed for votes in support of NDA candidate Upendra Kushwaha. Here, he praised the people of Bihar for their good assessment of politics and decisive voting. He spoke of his party having a strong stance against cross-border terrorism as well as the Naxal insurgents problem that Bihar is struggling with. He also praised the NDA government in Bihar under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar as having strengthened security.
PM Modi is set to hold his third rally of the day from Buxar, from where BJP candidate Mithilesh Tiwari is in contest against INDIA bloc candidate Sudhakar Singh (RJD). Buxar is mythologically important in Hinduism for having connection with Lord Rama. It is where Lord Rama and his younger brother Lakshmana received early education.
The state of Bihar is considered as one of the pioneers of Indian politics having produced several veteran politicians and being one of the biggest assets to Indian politics with 40 Lok Sabha seats.
However, it recorded the lowest voter turnout in phase 1 at just 49.26%.
Between phases 2 to 5, the voter turnout saw a slight increase, staying in the range of 57-59%.
Today, Bihar has seen a voter turnout of 36.48% till 1 pm local time.

Kashmir votes amid tight security
Jammu and Kashmir is seeing its final phase of voting in the 6th phase of Lok Sabha election with the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency voting today.
As there were around half a dozen militancy-related incidents during pre-poll campaigning, tighter security arrangements have been made today to ensure voters can cast their vote with a comfortable and secure voting process.
In addition to the standard measures, special deployments have been made along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and especially in the border villages.
A top police officer told Rising Kashmir that comprehensive security arrangements were implemented across the 5 districts of Anantnag-Rajouri constituency.
“We have intensified security measures including increased deployment of personnel, area dominations in hill regions, additional checkpoints, and round-the-clock monitoring of the region and vital installations,” the official said.
Several additional companies of security personnel have been deployed, bolstering a security setup managed by the Army, police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Border Security Force (BSF), the official added.
He also mentioned that various Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and other units are active as key components of the overall security setup for the day. “Inter-district checkpoints are also set up to ensure a safe environment.”
In the last 30 days alone, Anantnag has experienced four terror attacks, indicating the heightened security challenges in the region.
But today, voting has been brisk and smooth, with nearly 24% voter turnout recorded till 11 am local time.

As the national capital goes to vote today, political leaders and top bureaucrats are among the first voters in the political powerhouse of India.
But the election commission has appealed to the urban voter base to come out to vote in huge numbers.
Earlier in the phase 5 of the election too, urban apathy in the cities of Mumbai, Thane, and Lucknow pulled down the overall voter turnout, according to the EC.
The poll authority issued a special statement yesterday, urging voters to “break the trend of urban apathy” and reminding them of their right and duty to vote.
“Even if the weather is harsh, it is our foremost responsibility as citizens to participate in this democratic process,” said chief electoral officer P Krishnamurthy. “While heatwaves, cold, and rain are part of every season, our commitment to voting should remain unwavering.”
Delhi is likely to witness heatwave conditions today with the temperature expected to soar to around 46 degrees Celsius.
However, shaded areas have been set up at polling stations, according to the Election Commission, and waiting areas have been fully covered. Coolers and fans have been installed, along with proper arrangements for cold drinking water, toilets, wheelchairs, and ramps.
For the first time in Delhi, paramedical staff are also present in all polling stations and volunteers are there to assist elderly voters.
All seven seats of Delhi are voting today, with an intense battle between the BJP and the AAP-Congress alliance. The BJP had won all seven seats in 2019.
In 2019, Delhi had witnessed an overall 60.6% polling.

After high-octane campaigns, the political powerhouses of Delhi and Haryana are voting today in phase 6 of the India election.
All 7 seats in the national capital Delhi and 10 seats of the neighbouring state Haryana are up for polls today.
Among the total 58 constituencies all over India, the other seats include: 8 in Bihar, 8 in West Bengal, 6 in Odisha, 4 in Jharkhand, and 14 in Uttar Pradesh.
Phase 6 of the Lok Sabha election is also seeing voting in the Jammu and Kashmir seat of Anantnag-Rajouri. The election there was postponed from phase 3 to 6 due to logistical issues owing to adverse weather conditions.
A total of 889 candidates are in the fray today, with Manohar Lal Khattar, Sambit Patra, Manoj Tiwari, Maneka Gandhi and Naveen Jindal from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kanhaiya Kumar and Raj Babbar from Congress, and Mehbooba Mufti from People’s Democratic Party (PDP) being the key candidates.
The Election Commission has urged the voters in the urban centres, including Delhi, Gurugram and Faridabad to break the trend of urban apathy by coming out in large numbers to vote on Saturday.
The last phase of polling will be on 1 June for the remaining 57 seats with counting of votes scheduled on 4 June.
