“NDA is making govt for the 3rd time” Modi says in victory speech
June 04, 2024. 10:02PM (GMT+6)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived a rousing welcome at the BJP headquarters on Friday after the NDA secured a historic third term in office. Party workers and supporters sounded ‘shankha’, danced to ‘dhol’ beats and chanted ‘Modi’ slogans as the newly re-elected lawmaker arrived. Senior politicians including Union Home Minister Amit Shah BJP chief JP Nadda were also in attendance.
“ …On this sacred day, it is confirmed that NDA is making govt for the 3rd time. We are grateful to the people. For the first time since 1962, a government has returned to power after completing two consecutive terms,” the Prime Minister said.
Modi had earlier lauded party workers for their hard work and vowed to “continue the good work done in the last decade”. Data shared by the Election Commission indicates that the BJP will win 240 seats on its own — a significant dip from its previous tally of 303. The party will now have to rely on alliance partners in order to form the government and come to power.

BJP loses seat in Ayodhya, home to Ram temple
June 04, 2024. 06:15PM (GMT+6)
Narendra Modi’s BJP have lost their seat in Ayodhya, a deeply symbolic loss for the party after the prime minister opened a grand but controversial Hindu temple there in January.
The BJP candidate, Lallu Singh, lost to a candidate put up by the regional Samajwadi Party, Singh’s poll agent Kamlesh Srivastava said, reports AP. Singh had held the seat since 2014.
Promises of Modi's party

Children hold India’s ruling BJP party’s symbol
Here are some of the main promises made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its election manifesto and at campaign rallies.
Modi is expected to win a third straight term after voting in the general election that ended on Saturday.
UNIFORM CIVIL CODE
The BJP’s manifesto promised a national code that will replace religion-specific civil laws in the country, a move many from the Muslim minority say is aimed at curbing centuries-old religious practices it follows.
TEMPLES AT DISPUTED SITES
After Modi inaugurated a temple to the Hindu God Ram at Ayodhya earlier this year, party leaders have said another emphatic electoral victory would help them to build temples on other disputed sites. This stems from their belief that Muslim invaders built mosques over demolished Hindu temples.
Courts are hearing cases against two mosques in BJP-run Uttar Pradesh state: in Modi’s Varanasi constituency and in Mathura.
ONE NATION, ONE ELECTION
Modi’s party has promised to implement an official report recommending elections to India’s 28 state assemblies and national parliament at the same time, every five years.
A government-appointed panel in March said holding simultaneous elections would improve governance and growth, but Modi’s opponents say it violates the federal system guaranteed in India’s constitution.
ECONOMY
The BJP manifesto “guarantees” India will grow to become the third-largest economy in the world, from the fifth largest. The party promises to maintain high growth and low inflation while keeping the budget deficit under control. It also talks about boosting manufacturing and employment opportunities.
PEACE IN THE INDIAN NORTHEAST
Modi’s party also promises to maintain peace in the nation’s northeast, without mentioning the BJP-run and violence-torn state of Manipur where ethnic clashes have killed at least 220 people and displaced thousands.
Where have the opposition consolidated?
June 04, 2024. 06:01PM (GMT+6)
Uttar Pradesh proved to be a shocker for the BJP where the INDIA bloc, fuelled by Akhilesh Yadav’s SP, is leading in 43 seats, reports Indian Express.
Another state where the BJP has lost considerable ground in West Bengal where the TMC has been able to consolidate its lead in at least 32 seats.
Maharashtra continues to be another state where the opposition has gained considerable ground, especially after the BJP split up the two regional heavyweights — Shiv Sena and the NCP. The opposition here stands at 30 seats, while the NDA trails with just 17 seats.
Congress reaching out to leaders outside NDA
June 04, 2024. 05:57PM (GMT+6)
With the Congress narrowing the gap between the government and the Opposition with a difference of just 50-odd seats, India’s grand old party has started making overtures to those outside the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) grouping and even those within.
From Eknath Shinde to Chandrababu Naidu, the outreach to leaders is taking place behind the scenes, said people aware of the matter.
Hindustan Times has reported that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has reached out to Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) and Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD), apart from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), or LJP, led by Chirag Paswan.

Congress delegation meets ECI, raises issue of data updation
June 04, 2024. 05:44PM (GMT+6)
“We went to the Election Commission at short notice to convey a concern of ours. The main issue was about not updating parliamentary constituency data round by round in terms of votes counted and the results of that round. However, it was clarified that it is done Assembly segment-wise. Parliamentary constituencies have on average seven Assemblies and it is done each round in each Assembly segment. Different Assembly segments follow different speeds of counting and also updation which is why there is a lack of synchronism in parliamentary constituency on the whole,” Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters.

June 04, 2024. 05:37PM (GMT+6)
The INDIA alliance has staged a remarkable resurgence in several politically-significant Hindi heartland states, with the latest trends in vote counting on Tuesday indicating a lead in 42 seats out of 80 in Uttar Pradesh, along with steady progress in Rajasthan, Bihar, Haryana, and Jharkhand.
Despite this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP-led alliance is poised to secure power for a third consecutive term, albeit without the overwhelming majority predicted by various exit polls.

Similarly, in Bihar, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) was ahead in four seats, the Congress in two, and the CPI(ML) in two.
In Haryana, both the Congress and BJP were leading in five seats each, marking a significant shift from the BJP’s clean sweep of all 10 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
In Jharkhand, the INDIA alliance’s Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) were ahead in three and two seats respectively, while the BJP led in eight seats.
However, the NDA maintained its dominance in Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Chhattisgarh, with the BJP leading in all seats in these states.
In total, the Hindi heartland states account for 225 Lok Sabha seats, making them crucial battlegrounds in shaping the political landscape of the nation.

West Bengal election results: Mamata's TMC leading in 33 seats
June 04, 2024. 03:50PM (GMT+6)
The trends that emerged from several rounds of counting today proved all exit poll predictions wrong as the Trinamool candidates are widening gap with their BJP rivals.
The exit polls predicted a major surprise in West Bengal for the ruling Trinamool but the surprise came from the incumbent party as it went on to lead in 33 seats. If the trends hold true, BJP’s performance dipped in 2024.
Trinamool had rejected the exit polls which gave a clear mandate to the BJP. “It is absolutely vague, absolutely fake. How is the media showing who will win which seat? How much money have they taken? I don’t believe the calculations. I will ask my workers to be strong and do the counting properly. We will get double of what the media has projected. I will not put a number. But I can tell you: we worked on the ground and never felt that the people will not vote for us,” Mamata Banerjee said.

Saffron flags, celebration mood at BJP headquarters as NDA NDA has gone past the majority mark
June 04, 2024. 01:10PM (GMT+6)
More than two hours after vote counting began, the mood at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in New Delhi is mixed as preliminary results are delivered across television news channels.
Party workers are putting up speakers and saffron party flags — the color associated with Hinduism, which reflects the BJP’s Hindu nationalist base.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s face is plastered across posters that crop up every few meters.
So far, the BJP is leading in early results on the Election Commission’s website – but the opposition Congress party is performing better.
Party workers at the headquarters seemed hesitant to say the BJP would definitively win a 400-seat supermajority in parliament — a claim repeated by the BJP’s top leaders.
Anxious workers are debating amongst themselves what number of seats the party would ultimately reach — frequently checking their phones for any updates on the preliminary results.
A media tent is set up for journalists to get some respite, with extreme heat killing dozens of people in the past few days, including many poll workers. A part of the capital of Delhi recorded the country’s highest-ever temperature of 49.9 degrees Celsius (121.8 degrees Fahrenheit) last week.
“We should have concluded the elections at least a month sooner. We should not have conducted it in such heat,” the Chief Election Commissioner said in a press briefing on Monday.
Near the headquarters, mats full of food are laid out for party workers and visitors — including puri, a type of flatbread.

Markets jittery in opening trade
June 04, 2024. 10:54AM (GMT+6)
Stock markets in India have reacted to early election trends in India.
Very early trends indicate a tougher and closer fight between the two major alliances, the NDA and the INDIA – instead of exit poll projections of a clear and decisive win for the BJP and PM Narendra Modi.
As a result, the Dalal Street tumbled early morning due to high volatility. Both the benchmark indices S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 plummeted over 3% in early trade.
India VIX, the volatility gauge, surged by over 20%.
According to the ECI website, early trends show the BJP-led NDA leading on 302 seats, with the INDIA bloc ahead on 219 seats.
However, it is important to note that these are preliminary figures.

How does India count 642 million votes?
June 04, 2024. 08:41AM (GMT+6)
In the history of the world, 642 million people have voted in the last month and a half in India.
It is now time for their choices to be heard. Fairly clear trends will emerge in the next four hours.
But how will India manage to count its 642 million votes?
For each of the 543 seats, a Returning Officer (RO) is assigned. This officer supervises and directs the counting process.
This happens in the presence of the seat’s candidates and their election agents to ensure complete transparency in vote counting.
The RO is typically the District Magistrate (DM) of the district concerned, and is nominated by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Each counting hall has various tables with EVMs on them. Each table has a counting supervisor, a counting assistant, counting staff, and a micro-observer. While the other officials are involved in the counting of votes, the micro-observer is solely there for the sanctity of the counting process.
All these officials are chosen from a database of officers using software developed centrally by the state’s Chief Electoral Officer.
No one, including the candidate, or the RO, is permitted to carry a mobile phone inside the counting hall. The only person who can do so is the ECI’s Observer.
The process begins with the counting of postal ballots. All postal ballots are counted at the RO’s table.
EVM counting starts 30 minutes later. The Strong Room, where the polled EVMs are stored, is opened in the presence of the
designated officials, and the candidates or their election agents. In fact, the seal of the lock is inspected and shown to the candidates or their election agents before being broken. The entire procedure is also videographed with date and time stamps.
Barricades or wire mesh are set up around each counting table to ensure that the EVMs are not physically accessible to the counting agents. The agents are required to remain seated beyond the wire mesh or barricades.
At each counting table, the votes cast at one polling station are addressed at a time.
When the counting official presses the result button on the EVM’s control unit, the total number of votes for each candidate and NOTA (None of the Above) appears on the display panel.
The EVM is turned off. This is done for all EVMs at various tables in a single round, and then the process is repeated – after a parallel counting for the round is done for two randomly selected EVMs to ensure fair and transparent results.
For every completed round, the RO announces the result and signs the relevant record. Unless this is done, the next round isn’t authorised.
The process isn’t finished yet. Once all rounds are completed, the vote counting is verified using the paper VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail).
This whole process is carried out across every single one of the 12 lakh polling stations set up in India for the 2024 general election.
India election results: What’s happening today
June 04, 2024. 08:30AM (GMT+6)
The counting of votes polled across 543 constituencies of India for deciding the winners of the Lok Sabha election is happening today on 4 June.
It will decide the fate of over 8,000 candidates who contested the polls.
The tallying of votes is being held from 8 am local time to the time that all the 642 million votes are counted.
Tight security has been deployed in some states such as West Bengal, Manipur, and Andhra Pradesh to check any post-poll violence.
The counting process will begin first with the postal ballots, followed by the counting of votes recorded on the electronic voting machines, EVMs.
Yesterday, at a press briefing, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar came down heavily on the Opposition parties for making allegations that the officials were influenced to vitiate the poll process.
The CEC also said that “fake narratives” had become too common in the electoral process.
Meanwhile, all major exit polls have predicted a straight third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
