Voting for the Srinagar constituency is underway, marking the first parliamentary election in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.
Security arrangements are tight, with a multi-layer security blanket thrown around polling stations, distribution centres, and strong rooms across the Srinagar constituency, which includes entire districts of Srinagar, Ganderbal, Pulwama, and parts of Budgam and Shopian districts.
In terms of candidates, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has fielded Waheed Ur Rehman Para, while the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) is being represented by Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi. This seat has been represented by three generations of Abdullahs. The Congress has allied with the National Conference (NC) while the BJP has not fielded their candidate for the seat.
J-K has been under central rule since the fall of the PDP-BJP government in June 2018, with the last assembly polls held in 2014.
In the 2019 parliamentary elections, there was very low voter turnout of 15.6% amid calls for boycott and strikes.
Elections in Jammu and Kashmir are being held in five phases. In the 2019 elections, the BJP won three seats, while the NC won the remaining three. The PDP and NC, despite being allies in the opposition alliance INDIA bloc, have decided to go solo in the 2024 elections here.
