According to Indian media reports, Anar had visited a residence in the same Newtown area on May 13, where he met his tragic end. The house he visited was reportedly owned by an excise officer. Anar was allegedly lured to the rented house and subsequently killed.
On the day of the murder, several individuals, including a woman, were present in the house. The Kolkata Police believe that the murder was premeditated.
What Intelligence Sources Say?
According to an intelligence source in Bangladesh, MP Azim traveled to India alone, but it appears that two other individuals accompanied him. Indian intelligence agencies obtained this information from CCTV camera footage. These two companions are long-time acquaintances of MP Azim and are believed to reside in his constituency, as reported by Kolkata 24/7.
The investigation further revealed that MP Azim’s mobile phone was active in Assam and Uttar Pradesh over the past four to five days. Prior to that, his phone locations indicated Benapole and Mozaffarabad.
Anwarul Azim, the Member of Parliament, hails from Nischintapur village in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah. On May 12, he traveled to West Bengal, India, seeking medical treatment. Departing alone in his car, he crossed the Darshana check post around 11 a.m. and entered India via Gede station. After completing the necessary formalities, he continued his journey in an engine-run rickshaw, carrying luggage with him. His driver, Tariqul Islam, returned to Kaliganj with the car.
The following day, MP Azim went to see a physician but did not return. Concerned, a local individual named Gopal Biswas filed a general diary (GD) with the Baranagar police station in India. Gopal, who had a 25-year family relationship with Anwarul Azim, reported that the MP visited his house on Mandalpara Lane in Kolkata around 7:00 p.m. Anwarul had come to Kolkata for medical check-ups. On May 13, he left to see a physician again, informing Gopal that he would have lunch outside and return that evening. Subsequently, he arranged for his own transportation.
However, Anwarul Azim did not return to Gopal Biswas’s home that evening. Instead, Gopal received a WhatsApp message from Anwarul’s number, stating that he was heading to Delhi for a special task and that there was no need to call him. On May 15 at 11:21 a.m., Gopal received another text confirming Anwarul’s safe arrival in Delhi, where he claimed to be with VIPs.
Despite these messages, Anwarul’s personal secretary, Abdur Rauf, missed a call from him on May 16. Repeated attempts to reach Anwarul Azim went unanswered. The next day, Anwarul’s daughter contacted Gopal Biswas, expressing her inability to reach her father. Gopal then reached out to Anwarul’s acquaintances, but none of them had any information about his whereabouts.
