On February 14, 2024, Obaidul Quader, the general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, revealed the names of 48 candidates nominated by Awami League for the 50 women’s reserved seats in the 12th National Parliament. The ruling Awami League, along with 14 party allies, finalized their selections for these reserved seats. The voting is scheduled to take place on March 14.

Earlier that day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held discussions with the Awami League nominees for the reserved seats in the Jatiya Sangsad at Ganobhaban. Later in the afternoon, Obaidul Quader, as the party’s general secretary, made the final candidate list public.

The Election Commission has already established the timetable for the 50 reserved women’s seats of the 12th Parliament, with nomination papers being accepted from 9 am to 4 pm on February 18.

Previously, the Awami League had distributed nomination forms for the reserved women’s seats in the 12th National Parliament from February 6 to February 8, witnessing 1549 women purchasing party forms within the three days, totaling Tk 7 crore 74 lakh 50 thousand.

As per party insiders, the National Parliament reserves 50 seats for women, with each political entity securing one reserved seat for women against every six regular seats. Consequently, the Awami League is set to occupy 48 seats, backed by their own support and that of independents.

The candidates that AL selected for the reserved seats are listed below:

General Secretary, Bangladesh Mahila Awami League and served as a member of the reserved women's seat in the 11th National Parliament

Parul Akhter - Dhaka

General Secretary, Dhaka South City Mohila Awami League.

Sabera Begum - Dhaka

President, Dhaka South City Mohila Awami League

Nahid Izhar Khan - Dhaka

Politician of Bangladesh Awami League and also served as a member of the National Parliament of the reserved women seat-5 in the 11th National Parliament

Shaheda Tareque Dipti - Dhaka

President, Dhaka North City Mahila Awami League and a former Member of Parliament from the reserved women's seat

Anima Mukti Gameja - Dhaka

Politician of Bangladesh Awami League

Hasina Bari Chowdhury - Dhaka

General Secretary, Dhaka North City Mohila Awami League and the Councilor of Wards 1, 17, and 18 of Dhaka North City Corporation.

Sheikh Anarkali Putul - Dhaka
