With discussions ongoing for potential exports to the UK and Brazil, the Duranta e-bike is poised to make a significant impact on the global market, showcasing Bangladesh’s capabilities in sustainable transportation solutions.

In a groundbreaking move, RFL Group has launched Bangladesh’s inaugural locally-manufactured electric bicycle (e-bike), the “Duranta,” which is already set to make its mark on the international stage. Within just a week of its domestic debut, the Duranta is slated for export to Germany, with talks underway for further expansion into the UK and Brazil markets.
On Thursday (February 8, 2024), RFL Group achieved a notable milestone by launching its e-bike “Duranta” in the local market, pioneering the nation’s first venture of its kind.

According to RN Paul, the managing director of the company, the Duranta e-bike garnered international attention even before its official launch in Bangladesh. The company has already received its first export order from Germany, with shipment preparations underway to meet the demand within a week. This swift international acceptance highlights the promising future of Bangladesh’s e-bike industry.

Paul also disclosed ongoing discussions with potential buyers from Brazil and the UK, indicating a growing interest in the Duranta e-bike beyond the borders of Bangladesh. Visits to the manufacturing facility are being arranged for representatives from these countries to finalize export agreements, signaling the global appeal of Bangladesh’s e-bike innovation.

E-Bike Models and Production

Initially, the Duranta e-bike will offer two models – the Duranta E-Rider 101 and Duranta E-Rider 201 – catering to diverse consumer preferences. With competitive pricing, the Duranta E-Rider 101 will be available for Tk42,000, while the Duranta E-Rider 201 will retail at Tk55,000 in the domestic market. Additionally,  two other models are undergoing testing and are slated for release soon, further expanding consumer choices.

The Duranta e-bike is proudly manufactured at the state-of-the-art facility of Rangpur Metal Industries Limited, a subsidiary of RFL Group, situated in the Habiganj Industrial Park. With an annual production capacity of approximately 5,000 units, the facility serves as the backbone of Bangladesh’s burgeoning e-bike industry, poised for exponential growth on the global stage.

According to Md Mahmudur Rahman, the chief operating officer of Rangpur Metal, they have secured an order for one container of e-bikes, valued at $36,000. However, he refrained from disclosing the exact quantity of bikes intended for export.

Innovations and Features: The Duranta Advantage

The Duranta e-bike boasts cutting-edge features designed to enhance user experience and convenience. Powered by a 36-volt lithium battery, produced in-house at the Rangpur Metal factory, the Duranta offers a top speed of 25km per hour and a range of up to 45km on a single charge. With a charging time of 4-5 hours and the ability to pedal like a traditional bicycle, the Duranta seamlessly integrates sustainability with practicality.

To ensure customer satisfaction and peace of mind, purchasers of the Duranta e-bike will receive a six-month warranty on electrical components, along with four complimentary servicing sessions within the first six months of purchase. This commitment to after-sales support underscores RFL Group’s dedication to delivering quality products and exceptional service to its valued customers.

E-Bike Market Potential

Pran Group MD RN Paul highlighted the immense potential of the e-bike market, emphasizing its burgeoning demand in the international arena, valued at approximately $120 billion. He noted that e-bikes are increasingly favored worldwide for their convenience and eco-friendly attributes compared to traditional bicycles and motorized vehicles.

“So, it is the right time to enter the global market, otherwise, we will lag behind”

– RN Paul, Managing Director, PRAN-RFL Group

Paul underscored the urgency of seizing this opportunity to enter the global market to avoid falling behind. Regarding the local market, he acknowledged the delayed emergence of e-bikes but highlighted their growing popularity in urban areas of Bangladesh. Paul projected an annual demand of at least 10,000 units of e-bikes in the country. Furthermore, he mentioned the current assembly of China-made batteries in Bangladesh and expressed plans for future battery production by the company.

First Ever Made E-bike in Bangladesh

The Walton e-bike is the first pioneering e-bike step in Bangladesh, securing BRTA approval to cruise the nation’s highways alongside conventional petrol-powered motorcycles, offering an eco-friendly alternative. Walton offers registration options spanning two to ten years, paralleling those of traditional gasoline bikes, with noticeably reduced registration fees.

Introducing two variants of the Takyon E-Bike, Walton presents the Takyon 1.20 model featuring a robust 1.5 KW BOSCH motor, achieving speeds of up to 45 KM/h with a range of 50 to 60 KM, all powered by a 48V 26Ah Lithium battery, priced at 104,900 Bangladesh Taka.

The Takyon 1.00 model boasts a 1.2 KW hub motor propelling it to speeds of 50 KM/h, offering a range of 60 to 70 KM, supported by a 72V 23Ah Graphene Lead Acid Battery, accommodating loads of up to 180 KG, priced slightly higher at 127,750 Bangladesh Taka.

Electric Bikes: Smart Choice

Electric bikes offer numerous advantages over conventional bicycles, making them an appealing choice for many riders. Firstly, electric bikes provide assistance when pedaling, making uphill climbs and long distances more manageable, particularly for commuters or those with physical limitations. Additionally, they offer flexibility by allowing riders to switch between pedaling and using the electric motor, adapting to various terrains and fitness levels. Electric bikes are also eco-friendly, emitting no greenhouse gases or pollutants during operation, contributing to a cleaner environment. Moreover, they promote health and fitness by encouraging more people to cycle regularly, even if they’re not avid cyclists. From a practical standpoint, electric bikes can save time and money on commuting, with lower operating costs compared to cars or public transportation. Overall, the convenience, versatility, environmental benefits, and health incentives make electric bikes a compelling choice for modern riders seeking an efficient and enjoyable mode of transportation.

In Conclusion, the launch of the Duranta e-bike represents a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s journey towards sustainable transportation solutions. With its imminent entry into the global market and ambitious expansion plans, RFL Group is poised to propel Bangladesh onto the international stage as a trailblazer in e-bike innovation. As consumers embrace eco-conscious mobility options, the Duranta stands as a testament to Bangladesh’s ingenuity and commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
