Barrister Shah Ali Farhad, former special aide to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, criticize ex-US diplomat stationed in Dhaka Jon Danilowicz for questioning a Chattogram court’s verdict.
A Chattogram court on Thursday sentenced a 22-year-old man to five years in jail for posting derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook.
In a tweet on October 26, 2023, Jon Danilowicz, from his verified handle criticized the court’s verdict on X (former Twitter), saying “How is this defensible in a democracy?”
In reply, Barrister Shah Ali Farhad, a Senior Associate at Centre for Research and Information (CRI), said wrote, ‘Here you go, Ignoramus!’ and attached some photos showing some US citizens sentenced to prison for derogatory remarks against US presidents.
Regarding the verdict, Public Prosecutor Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury said the tribunal sentenced the accused to one year of rigorous imprisonment under sections 25 (2) and 29 (1) each of the Digital Security Act and three years’ rigorous imprisonment under Section 31 (2), reports UNB.
Jon Danilowicz, a former Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Bangladesh has become a propagandist in favor of Islamists and jihadists in Bangladesh by joining a vicious group named ‘Right to Freedom’, which is jointly funded by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Jon Danilowicz repeatedly got backlash from conscious citizens of Bangladesh as he has been proactive on his twitter handle, criticizing Bangladesh and ruling Awami League.
A report from Washington-based Daily Signal found that Jon tried coercing Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to drop another legal case against Dr. Yunus or he threaten Sajeeb Wazed Joy to be audited by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
US Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa investigated this matter and sent a note to then Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that said, “two conversations with then-Deputy Chief of Mission to Bangladesh Jon Danilowicz during which Danilowicz mentioned that Wazed may be audited by the IRS if he failed to use his influence to get his mother to drop the investigation into Yunus.”
He also allegedly made frantic bids in saving war criminals from being prosecuted. As a result, he was abruptly withdrawn from Dhaka and transferred to Islamabad as Consulate General – just within 17 months of his stay in Bangladesh.
