John Alfred Tinniswood, the world’s oldest man, passed away on Monday at 112 in a Southport care home. A lifelong Liverpool FC fan, Mr. Tinniswood became the world’s oldest man in April 2024, following the death of Juan Vicente Pérez Mora.
Born on 26 August 1912, the year the Titanic sank, Mr. Tinniswood was recognised as the UK’s oldest man in 2020 and achieved global recognition by the Guinness Book of Records this year.
A widower, he is survived by his daughter Susan, grandchildren Annouchka, Marisa, Toby, and Rupert, and great-grandchildren Tabitha, Callum, and Nieve. His family described him as intelligent, decisive, brave, and a gifted conversationalist—qualities he demonstrated during his World War II service in the Royal Army Pay Corps, where he managed logistics and accounts.
He married his wife Blodwen in 1942, and the couple enjoyed 44 years together until her passing in 1986. After the war, Mr. Tinniswood worked for Royal Mail and later as an accountant for Shell and BP, retiring in 1972. In retirement, he remained active, serving as a church elder and giving sermons at Blundellsands United Reform Church. His family said he passed “surrounded by music and love.”
