Donald Trump has announced that he will run for the presidency of the United States again in 2024 with a Republican Party ticket. The highly anticipated announcement comes despite facing various criminal investigations and the weak performance of politicians he supported in midterm elections.
Trump made the statement at his Florida Mar-a-Lago Club during a period of political vulnerability, as his preferred candidates were resoundingly rejected by voters in last week’s midterm elections. Since then, elected Republicans have been unusually open about blaming Trump for the party’s poor performance, and potential rivals are already openly planning to run against Trump for the nomination.
Trump claims of “making America great”
Trump’s staff registered a political committee called “Donald J. Trump for President 2024” with the US Federal Election Commission.
Trump declared, “In order to make America great again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” addressing the gathering of supporters, family members, and former staffers. This time Trump didn’t name-call as he has done in other public appearances. Instead, he criticized Biden’s presidency and talked about what he thought were the policy successes of his own time in office. With the phrase “We’re being poisoned” and the description of American cities as “cesspools of blood,” Trump outlined some of his trademark dark themes from his playbook.
“I am running because I believe the world has not yet seen the true glory of what this nation can be,” Trump stated. “We will once more put America first,” he continued. He proclaimed that he will defeat Joe Biden in 2024 and said, “America’s golden age is just ahead.”
Trump claimed that he would advocate for the death sentence for drug dealers and rehire military personnel discharged for refusing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
A long way before the 2024 election
The first state-level elections are more than a year away. So there is a long way to go before, as the Republican presidential nominee will be formally chosen in the summer of 2024 in the US. Analysts speculate that Trump’s astonishingly early campaign could be an attempt to fight off possible rivals for the party’s candidacy in 2024, like rising Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, 44, and Trump’s former vice president Mike Pence, 63
Trump’s announcement came on the same day when Mike Pence’s memoir, “So Help Me God”, came out. In it, the once-loyal Trump vice president criticizes Trump for his actions on January 6. Despite losing support from the MAGA base, the former vice president is still planning a potential 2024 campaign. Trump asserted that he was the only candidate capable of delivering a Republican triumph in 2024, despite Republican setbacks in 2022 and his own defeat in 2020.
“This is not a task for a politician or a conventional candidate. This is a task for a great movement.” Trump declared.
His third run for the presidency comes as his legal issues are becoming worse. The justice department is looking into his role in the 6 January attack as well as the removal of hundreds of top-secret papers from the White House to his Florida estate. Trump has denied the involvement and has used the assaults to support his claim that he has been unfairly attacked by his political rivals and a mysterious “deep state” bureaucracy.
The “National greatness agenda”
Trump said that his successor, Joe Biden, had caused “pain, hardship, anxiety, and despair” with his economic and domestic policies. Trump attacked the timeline of Biden’s presidency by calling it “the pause” period.
Trump provided an alternate perspective, which he referred to as the “national greatness agenda”. On Tuesday, he backed several policy initiatives, including executing drug traffickers, limiting congressional terms, and establishing an American flag on Mars. Trump promised to protect “paternal rights” and stop transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports, getting into the social fights he likes to initiate.
Trump made no specific reference to his election fraud deceptions, but he did promise to alter the nation’s voting laws and declare a winner on election night. Through close races in the midterm elections of 2022, it can take several days before enough votes are counted in a state to predict a winner. However, Trump and his supporters have taken the advantage of this delay to promote himself once again.
