Meta is set to unveil “Edits,” a new video editing app inspired by the popular TikTok editing tool, CapCut. Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, announced that this innovative app will offer a complete creative toolkit for content creators and will initially be available for iPhones in April, with an Android release to follow.
Unlike traditional editing apps, Edits aims to go beyond video editing. The app features multiple tabs for planning content creation, high-quality camera tools, and options to share partially edited videos. iPhone users can pre-order the app now from the Apple App Store, while Android users can expect availability on the Google Play Store soon.
The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for TikTok, which recently faced a temporary ban in the U.S. and must comply with strict conditions within the next two and a half months to continue operations. Industry experts view Meta’s move as strategic, capitalizing on TikTok’s vulnerabilities during regulatory scrutiny.
Meta has a history of leveraging competitors’ weaknesses. In 2020, just a month after TikTok was banned in India, Meta launched Reels on Instagram, mimicking TikTok’s core features. With Edits, Meta takes another step in its ongoing rivalry with TikTok, aiming to dominate the video editing space.
