With its dual rail and road infrastructure, Karnaphuli Bridge not only addresses transportation challenges but also unlocks opportunities for economic growth and tourism development

In the heart of Bangladesh’s ambitious infrastructure endeavors lies the imminent construction of the Karnaphuli Bridge a monumental feat poised to redefine connectivity and economic vitality in the region. Spanning the majestic Karnaphuli River, this bridge stands as a testament to Bangladesh’s commitment to progress and development.

As plans unfold, the bridge will seamlessly link the bustling Cox’s Bazar, renowned for its tourism allure, with the strategic Matarbari deep-sea port—a nexus of maritime activity. Serving as the country’s second major infrastructure venture after the Padma Multipurpose Bridge, its significance cannot be overstated.

The New Rail-Cum-Road Bridge in Karnaphuli River

Propelled by the need to address the aging Kalurghat bridge’s limitations, this new marvel of engineering promises to revolutionize transportation dynamics. With dual-gauge rails and a two-lane road stretching nearly a kilometer, it will usher in an era of enhanced mobility, accommodating both passenger and cargo traffic with unprecedented efficiency.

Funded substantially by the Korean development partner Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), and supplemented by project loans, the bridge embodies international collaboration in pursuit of national progress. Scheduled for completion by December 2030, its impact on Bangladesh’s socio-economic landscape is poised to be profound. From bolstering logistics and tourism to fortifying disaster resilience, the Karnaphuli Bridge emerges not just as a physical structure but as a beacon of hope, prosperity, and connectivity for Bangladesh and beyond

As per the proposed design, trains will operate at a maximum speed of 120km per hour, while the roadway will accommodate speeds up to 65kmph, with the embankment and substructure designed to withstand a 25-tonne-axle load.

Bangladesh Railway (BR), a government-owned rail service provider, has submitted a Development Project Proposal (DPP) to the Planning Commission (PC) for assessment before commencing physical construction. Upon approval from the PC, procurement processes will commence, including hiring consultants and construction contractors, with construction slated to begin next month and completion expected by December 2030.

Highlighting the deteriorating condition of the current Kalurghat bridge, a senior BR official emphasizes the necessity for its replacement to establish a vital link between the bustling Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar corridor.

This forthcoming bridge will rank as the second-largest in Bangladesh, trailing only the 6.15km Padma bridge, which connects the capital with Khulna and Barisal divisions in the southwest. BR anticipates initiating the ‘Construction of rail-cum-road bridge over the river Karnaphuli at Kalurghat project’ in April 2024, aiming for completion within a decade.

Addressing the challenges posed by the vulnerable Kalurghat bridge, another official underscores its hindrance to seamless train service to Cox’s Bazar, despite recent track upgrades in the Dohazari-Cox’s Bazar section.

A feasibility study for the Kalurghat Bridge was conducted in 2022 by the Korean Export-Import Bank (KEXIM) and affiliated firms, providing technical support.

Bridge Project Financing Plan

According to BR sources, the megaproject is estimated to cost Tk 115.66 billion, with the Korean development partner EDCF slated to finance a significant portion of the bridge construction expenses. Of this total, the Railway plans to allocate Tk 44.37 billion from the government’s internal resources, while the remaining Tk 71.28 billion will be secured through a project loan from the Korean lender. BR officials have confirmed that EDCF has already pledged to provide the project loan totaling Tk 71.28 billion.

Benefits of the Bridge Connectivity

Enhanced Connectivity: The new rail-cum-road bridge in Karnaphuli River will significantly improve connectivity in the region by providing both road and rail links. This will facilitate easier transportation of goods and people between Matarbari and surrounding areas, boosting economic activities.

Improved Logistics: With both rail and road access, logistics operations in Matarbari will become more efficient. Industries, businesses, and ports will benefit from streamlined transportation, reducing costs and increasing productivity.

Tourism Boost: The bridge will open up Matarbari to tourists, providing easier access to its scenic beauty and cultural attractions. This will stimulate tourism development, leading to job creation and economic growth in the hospitality sector.

Disaster Resilience: The bridge will be a critical lifeline during emergencies and natural disasters. With dual transportation options, it will facilitate swift evacuation and aid delivery, enhancing the region’s resilience to disasters.

Socio-Economic Development: Overall, the bridge will catalyze socio-economic development in Matarbari and neighboring areas. Improved connectivity, logistics, and access to tourism will attract investments, create employment opportunities, and uplift the standard of living for local communities.

The new rail-cum-road bridge in Matarbari promises a plethora of benefits ranging from improved connectivity and logistics to tourism promotion and disaster resilience, ultimately driving socio-economic development in the region.

In conclusion, the impending construction of the Karnaphuli Bridge heralds a new era of progress and connectivity for Bangladesh. With its dual rail and road infrastructure, it not only addresses transportation challenges but also unlocks opportunities for economic growth and tourism development. Supported by international collaboration and strategic financing, this bridge stands as a symbol of Bangladesh’s commitment to fostering prosperity and resilience in the region.
