UN secretary general congratulates Sheikh Hasina

This recognition is of the utmost importance in consolidating Bangladesh’s position as a country that adheres to democratic values and principles in the international community.

On Thursday, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres extended his heartfelt congratulations to Sheikh Hasina on her re-election as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for the fourth consecutive term.

The United Nations (UN) Secretary General stated, “I wish to congratulate you on your re-election as Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.”

“The United Nations remains committed to working with your Government, including through the United Nations Country Team, for the benefit of the people of Bangladesh,” Guterres added.

UN’s commitment to Bangladesh

The Secretary General highlighted the UN’s profound appreciation for Bangladesh’s partnership under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. He specifically commended the nation’s notable contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, compassion towards Rohingya refugees, and dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

“I am also appreciative of your participation in the Global Crisis Response Group and trust that I can continue to count on your support in our ambition to address growing global challenges, including the fight against climate change and the pressing need to reform the international financial architecture,” he said.

The commitment to working with Bangladesh through the United Nations Country Team demonstrates a collaborative effort to address global challenges and the need for international financial architecture reform.

In the end, he said, “Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration”.

International acceptance of Bangladesh’s democratic process:

The congratulatory messages from not only UN, but also from various global leaders underscore the widespread international recognition of Sheikh Hasina’s leadership and the credibility of Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections. Leaders from  United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Luxemburg, Turkey, Singapore, Malaysia, and Brazil all conveyed their warm wishes and support for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China’s President Xi Jingping, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. They all acknowledged the social and economic achievements under her government and extended their wishes for the continued prosperity of Bangladesh. The extensive support shown for the prime minister not only signifies personal admiration but also inspires trust in the democratic system and governance in Bangladesh.

The recognition from these diverse nations and organizations demonstrates the consensus on the credibility and fairness of the electoral process.
