Cameron Diaz returned to acting after a decade-long hiatus with Netflix’s Back in Action, co-starring Jamie Foxx. Released last Friday, the film marks Diaz’s first appearance since her 2014 movie Annie, after which she stepped away from Hollywood to focus on family. However, her much-anticipated comeback fell short of expectations.
Diaz, who plays Emily, a former CIA agent opposite Foxx’s character Matt, admitted she remains undecided about resuming a regular acting career. Speaking to Empire Magazine, she said, “I have the right to never act again, but I also have the freedom to say yes to any future opportunity.” She revealed that Jamie Foxx was instrumental in her return, saying, “When Jamie called, I couldn’t say no. If there’s one actor I’d spend months laughing with on set, it’s him.” Interestingly, Annie, her last film before her break, also featured Foxx.
Despite the hype, the film has received lukewarm reviews. Rotten Tomatoes shows a mere 24% positive rating, while Metacritic scores it at 4.5/10. Variety called it “mediocre,” and The Guardian rated it 3/5, describing it as “average.” Diaz’s return, while nostalgic, lacked the impact fans had hoped for.
