An armed gang attempted to rob the Rupali Bank’s Jinjira branch in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Tuesday noon and sparking a tense hostage situation. The robbers are currently holding several clients including a number of bank staffs, inside the building.

Local police and elite security forces, including the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and army personnel, have surrounded the bank in a bid to resolve the crisis.

Superintendent of Dhaka District Police Ahmed Muyid confirmed the incident, stating that the armed robbers stormed the bank premises around 2:00 PM. Locals quickly mobilized, locking the building to prevent the robbers’ escape.

South Keraniganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mazharul Islam remarked, “A number of people, including bank officials, are being held hostage inside. We are prepared to conduct a rescue operation at any moment.”

Efforts to negotiate with the robbers are ongoing, according to law enforcement. RAB Media Officer Tapash Karmaker said, “About 3-4 teams of RAB have been deployed. The robbers are armed, and we’ve called for assistance from the army.”

Eyewitnesses described the unfolding drama, noting that announcements were made via a nearby mosque’s loudspeaker, urging locals to assemble and help secure the area. Several hundred people have reportedly gathered outside the bank.

Security forces have cordoned off the Chunkutia Pakapul area where the bank is located. RAB officials have confirmed that between three to four robbers are inside, but the exact number of hostages remains unclear.

While the situation remains tense, law enforcement agencies are coordinating to ensure the safe rescue of hostages and apprehension of the armed perpetrators.

As of now, the operation has not commenced, but authorities are closely monitoring the unfolding developments.
