Barcelona controlled 80% of possession, took 20 shots, and created multiple clear scoring chances. Yet, on Sunday night at the Olympic Stadium, it was Leganes who emerged victorious, securing a shocking 1-0 win. Sergio Gonzalez’s fourth-minute header from a corner gave Leganes an early lead, which they defended valiantly for the rest of the match. Despite relentless pressure, Barcelona couldn’t find the net, suffering their fourth La Liga defeat of the season.
Barcelona players wasted several opportunities. In the 20th minute, Leganes goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic denied Robert Lewandowski with a brilliant save. Raphinha’s 33rd-minute strike deflected off Dmitrovic, hit the crossbar, and stayed out. Lamine Yamal squandered a golden chance in first-half injury time. In the second half, Lewandowski missed the target, Yamal shot wide, and Jules Kounde astonishingly missed from close range. In added time, Fermin Lopez’s powerful shot was cleared off the line by Leganes’ Oscar Rodriguez.
This defeat is Barcelona’s second consecutive home loss in La Liga after falling 2-1 to Las Palmas. Though they remain atop the table with 38 points, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid are close behind, poised to overtake them in the title race.
