Barbara Taylor Bradford, the best-selling author of A Woman of Substance and a literary icon, has passed away at the age of 91. Renowned for her sweeping epic novels that captivated millions, her work remains a cornerstone of modern fiction.

Her debut novel, A Woman of Substance, published in 1979, became a global sensation, selling 30 million copies and spawning seven sequels. Its TV adaptation remains Channel 4’s most-watched program to date. This groundbreaking story of resilience and ambition marked the beginning of a prolific career that saw Taylor Bradford pen 40 novels, including beloved series like Ravenscar, Cavendon, and the House of Falconer.

Barbara Taylor Bradford redefined commercial fiction with her multigenerational sagas that transcended the romance genre. Paying tribute, her publisher and editor Lynne Drew highlighted her remarkable contributions, stating, “She epitomized the woman of substance she created, particularly with her ruthless work ethic.”
