Online scams are evolving rapidly as hackers use advanced tactics to exploit unsuspecting internet users. Recently, Google issued a warning highlighting a surge in fraud involving artificial intelligence (AI) technology and cryptocurrency.
Hackers are leveraging AI to create deepfake videos of celebrities, promoting fake investment schemes to trick people. They are also running scams by enticing users with fake cryptocurrency purchases. Additionally, counterfeit versions of popular apps and websites are being created to steal user data, sell fake products, and commit other frauds.
Cryptocurrency scams are particularly rampant in Southeast Asia, with Chinese criminal groups actively involved. These groups use tactics like offering high-paying job opportunities to trap victims.
In response, Google plans to issue regular safety alerts every six months and has partnered with the Global Anti-Scam Alliance and DNS Research Federation to strengthen cybersecurity.
To further protect users, Google has introduced a scam detection feature for Android devices. This feature identifies suspicious calls and alerts users if harmful apps are installed, ensuring an additional layer of security.
