Matia Chowdhury, a prominent Bangladeshi politician and senior leader of the Bangladesh Awami League, has passed away at the age of 82 in Dhaka.
The politician breathed her last on Wednesday afternoon while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. Her family confirmed that she had been suffering from various age-related illnesses for a long period.
Born on June 30, 1942, in Nazirpur, Pirojpur, Chowdhury embarked on her political journey through the Bangladesh Students Union, where she became president in 1965. Chowdhury was actively involved in the anti-Ayub Khan movement and faced imprisonment multiple times. After Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, she joined the Awami League and became a prominent leader.
Chowdhury served as the country’s deputy leader of parliament and represented Sherpur-2 as a member of parliament from 2009 to 2024. She held the position of agriculture minister during two separate Awami League administrations, from 1996 to 2001 and 2009 to 2019.
