Google has taken a groundbreaking step by partnering with Kairos Power to fuel its data centers with nuclear energy, marking the tech giant’s first major foray into nuclear power. This historic deal involves the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) to meet the massive energy demands of AI-driven data centers, aiming to bring about 500 megawatts of carbon-free electricity online by 2030.

The SMRs, smaller and more cost-effective than traditional reactors, are factory-built, reducing both construction time and expenses. This aligns with Google’s strategy to scale sustainable energy solutions quickly and affordably. The initial reactors are expected to go live in 2030, with plans for further expansion by 2035, as Google seeks to lower its carbon footprint and address the rising energy needs of AI technologies.

By leveraging nuclear power, Google joins a growing list of tech companies like Microsoft and Amazon, which have also signed deals to secure nuclear energy for their AI ambitions. This move not only reflects a push towards clean energy but also highlights the ongoing “nuclear renaissance” driven by Big Tech’s power demands.
