Bangladesh’s hopes of reaching the semifinals in the Women’s T20 World Cup were dashed as they suffered a seven-wicket defeat to South Africa in their final group match on Saturday in Dubai. Having already faced two consecutive losses, the chances of a semifinal spot were slim, but this final blow marked the end of their campaign.
Bangladesh, led by Nigar Sultana Joty, batted first and posted 106 runs for three wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Despite solid efforts, the team failed to accelerate, with Sobhana Mostary scoring 38 off 43 balls and captain Nigar remaining unbeaten with 32 off 38. South African bowlers Marizanne Kapp, Anneke Dercksen, and Nonkululeko Mlaba each took a wicket, restricting Bangladesh’s score.
In response, South Africa chased down the target comfortably in 17.2 overs, losing just three wickets. Although skipper Laura Wolvaardt fell early, Tazmin Brits anchored the innings with a crucial 42 off 41 deliveries. Contributions from Anneke Bosch, Kapp, and Chloe Tryon sealed the victory, with Fahima Khatun and Ritu Moni claiming wickets for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh began their World Cup journey with a win against Scotland, sparking hopes for a semifinal berth. However, successive defeats to England, West Indies, and now South Africa left them with only one win. With this loss, Bangladesh’s World Cup run ends, while South Africa’s semifinal spot from Group B looks secure. England and West Indies will battle for the remaining slot, as will India and New Zealand in Group A.
