Nearly 42,000 Palestinians killed, more than half of them women and children, as the besieged enclave marks a year of Israel’s genocidal war

Today marks one year since the outbreak of the Gaza War, a conflict that drew global attention and left deep scars on the region. The violence that erupted on October 7, 2023, brought a surge of devastation to the lives of countless civilians, leading to widespread destruction and a humanitarian crisis that lingers to this day. As we look back, this anniversary serves as a reminder of the enduring struggles faced by those affected and the ongoing complexities of peace in the Middle East.

A woman holding a child flees Israeli airstrikes that hit a neighbourhood in Gaza City on 23 October.

I have captured countless images of people being pulled from beneath the rubble, but one moment will never leave my mind. I saw this woman when she jumped from a bombed house, running with her child in her arms, trying to shield her from danger.I can’t comprehend where she found such strength – how she managed to flee while protecting her daughter.
This war taught me that mothers truly possess a kind of superhuman resilience.
No mother on this Earth should ever have to endure the terror of running for her life to save her child.

Israel has also displaced nearly all of the enclave’s 2.3 million people, caused a hunger crisis and led to genocide allegations at the World Court that Israel denies.
