Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a close meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his recent visit to Russia. Through this meeting, Modi tried to strengthen India-Russia relations. However, Modi’s visit was broader than improving relations with Russia. Modi also placed a big bet on his friend Donald Trump. This article will discuss Modi’s strategic move and its possible implications.

Enhancing India-Russia Relations

Modi’s visit to Russia aimed to bolster India-Russia ties, which have historically been strong and have grown over time. Russia is a key supplier of defense equipment to India. Recent years have seen increased economic and cultural connections between the two nations. During the visit, Modi and Russian leaders discussed economic cooperation, defense agreements, and other strategic matters. Strengthening the relationship with Russia positions India more favorably on the global stage.

Modi is also banking on US President Donald Trump’s re-election. By referring to Trump as ‘my friend’, Modi highlighted the close bond between the two leaders, which has positively impacted India-US relations. Modi’s strategic vision involves a strengthened India-US relationship under Trump’s leadership, enhancing India’s global standing.

Geopolitical Calculations Towards a Multipolar World Order

Modi’s strategy reflects a deep understanding of current global power dynamics, with the US, Russia, and China being key players. Modi aims to establish a multipolar world order with India playing a crucial role. By reinforcing ties with both Russia and the US, Modi seeks to counterbalance China’s growing influence, protecting India’s security and economic interests, and boosting its position in international politics.

Modi’s efforts are geared towards creating a stable, balanced global order through strong relations with Russia and the US. This multipolar world aims for balanced interactions among nations, contributing to global stability and peace. Modi’s strategic move is significant for India’s national interests and its global standing.

Balanced Strategy

Modi’s close relationship with Trump is expected to further deepen India-US relations, enhancing cooperation in economic, defense, and strategic areas. Modi’s confidence in Trump’s victory suggests a positive outlook for Indo-US relations.

Modi’s balanced approach towards Russia and the US is a cornerstone of his global strategy. By strengthening ties with these major powers, India aims to secure its national interests and enhance its role in global politics. Modi’s recent visit to Russia and his overall strategic moves are pivotal in positioning India as a significant global power in a multipolar world order.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has robust diplomatic strategies to sustain strong relations with the United States. His decision to skip the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, organized by China and Russia, before his visit to Moscow demonstrates a calculated diplomatic manoeuvre. Additionally, India is set to host the Quad conference this year, an alliance between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States, which China views as a strategic challenge. This move underscores India’s commitment to its partnership with the US and its allies. Furthermore, the BRICS alliance conference in Kazan, Russia, later this year, presents another diplomatic crossroads. Modi’s attendance or absence at this conference will reflect New Delhi’s efforts to balance its global alliances while maintaining its relationship with Washington. Analysts argue that both India and the US recognize the mutual importance of their partnership, making them unlikely to take risks that could jeopardize their alliance.
