Ramadan, the month of charity and self-discipline observes soaring commodity and food prices necessary for Iftar and Suhur in the country. A joint initiative of Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliates Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, Bangladesh Awami Volunteers League and Bangladesh Chhatra League has launched the month-long sale of vegetables at affordable prices across Dhaka City to give people relief.
While many profit-mongers are drooling to make quick bucks Awami League’s bodies have set up makeshift selling stations across the country. This charity initiative not only marks the civic duty of a political party but also symbolizes its commitment to the religious duty of Sadaqah.
Awami League Presidium Member and Textiles and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak inaugurated the initiative in front of Shyamoli Math in the capital on Sunday morning. While inaugurating, Jahangir Kabir Nanak warned that no one will be spared if people are held hostage over the price of daily essentials during the holy month of Ramadan.
“I warned them that the market price which is supposed to be Sadaqah in the month of Ramadan, on the contrary, they have chosen the path of earning by holding people hostage. No one will be spared by challenging the party.” said.

Referring to the market concept, he said: “When traders buy a cauliflower from a farmer for Tk10 at the Nimsar market in Comilla, it becomes Tk50 when it reaches the city market. The farmer gets Tk10 while the traders sell it for Tk50. The middlemen make the most profit, the huge margin in between, is surprising.”
