Mbappe’s Departure from PSG

Mbappe, a World Cup winner with France and PSG’s record goal-scorer with an impressive tally of 244 goals has been a central figure in the footballing world’s speculation corridors for some time. His desire for a resolution before March led him to a crucial meeting with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi on 13th February, where he expressed his decision to join Real Madrid.

The saga took a decisive turn last Thursday (February 15, 2024) when reports surfaced of Mbappe’s departure plans. Consequently, he found himself on the bench for PSG’s match against Nantes but made a significant impact by scoring a penalty after coming on, further underlining his value to the team.

Details of the Deal

According to sources close to the negotiations, Mbappe is poised to sign a lucrative five-year deal with Real Madrid, earning a staggering 15 million euros (£12.8m) annually, supplemented by a signing-on bonus of 150 million euros (£128m) spread over five years. Additionally, he will retain a portion of his image rights, reflecting his status as one of football’s brightest stars.

Real Madrid’s manager Carlo Ancelotti has reportedly already devised plans for integrating Mbappe into the team, envisioning him playing a pivotal role on the left of the attacking trio alongside Vinicius Jr and England midfielder Jude Bellingham.

Mbappe’s Career Journey

2015-16

In 2015-16, Mbappe joined Monaco’s reserve team but quickly rose to the main squad due to his exceptional skills. He made his debut at just 16 years old, becoming Monaco’s youngest-ever player, and scored his first goal at 17, breaking another record. Mbappé signed his first professional contract in March 2016, hailed as a “phenomenon” by Monaco’s vice-president.

2016-17

In 2016-17, Mbappe had a breakout season with Monaco, scoring his first hat-tricks in both the Coupe de la Ligue and Ligue 1, becoming the youngest player in decades to achieve such feats. He also made a mark in the UEFA Champions League, becoming the second-youngest French scorer in its history. Mbappé’s pivotal goals helped Monaco advance to the Champions League semi-finals and win the Ligue 1 title, with him crediting teammate Radamel Falcao for his guidance and influence.

Mbappé ended the season as Ligue 1’s top goal-scorer with 33 goals, leading PSG to win the league title and earning himself the Player of the Year award.

2019-20

In 2019-20, Mbappe continued his stellar performance for PSG, winning the Trophée des Champions and finishing as joint-top scorer in Ligue 1 with 18 goals. PSG secured the league title and completed a domestic treble by also winning the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue. Despite an injury setback in the Coupe de France final, Mbappé returned to help PSG reach the Champions League final, where they narrowly lost to Bayern Munich.

2020-21

In 2020-21, Mbappe started the season recovering from COVID-19 but quickly made an impact, scoring goals and providing assists in both domestic and Champions League matches. Mbappé showcased his talent with a memorable hat-trick against Barcelona and played a crucial role in PSG’s cup triumph in the Coupe de France final against Monaco. Despite narrowly missing out on the Ligue 1 title, Mbappé finished as the league’s top scorer for the third consecutive season and received the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award

2021-22

In 2021-22, Mbappe faced speculation about a move to Real Madrid but stayed with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), extending his contract until 2025 despite interest from other clubs. He continued to excel on the field, becoming the youngest player to score 100 league goals for PSG and reaching milestones in the Champions League. Mbappe finished the season as Ligue 1’s top scorer for the fourth consecutive time, also becoming the first player in league history to top both the scoring and assist charts in a single season.

2022-23

In 2022-23, Mbappe continued his prolific form with PSG, achieving several milestones. He became PSG’s all-time top goal-scorer, surpassing Edinson Cavani’s record of 200 goals. Mbappe also scored his first five-goal haul in a match and finished as Ligue 1’s top scorer for the fifth consecutive season, helping PSG secure their 11th league title. Additionally, he received the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award for the fourth consecutive season.

2023-24

In 2023-24, Mbappé sparked speculation about his future by announcing his decision not to renew his contract with PSG, although he later denied rumors of a move to Real Madrid. Despite being excluded from PSG’s preseason tour, he was eventually reintegrated into the team after discussions with the club. Mbappé continued to excel on the field, becoming PSG’s all-time top scorer at the Parc des Princes and leading the team to success in the Trophée des Champions. However, uncertainty persisted about his future as reports suggested he had reached an agreement to join Real Madrid, although his agents denied such claims. Mbappé later informed PSG of his intention to leave the club at the end of his contract in June 2024.
