On the early morning of December 19, 2023, a tragic incident of arson on the Dhaka-bound Mohanganj Express train from Netrokona resulted in the ruthless deaths of four innocent passengers. Many people were injured in this incident. This is a heinous incident against humanity.

The brutality portrayed in this incident in the media is reminiscent of the brutality of 1971. This is not the first such incident against humanity. Since 2013, numerous lives have been lost due to politically motivated arson attacks, leaving lasting scars on our society. Many families have been torn apart by the tragic loss of their breadwinners, and countless innocent children have been left orphaned. It is apparent that certain groups with failed political agendas persist in committing these heinous acts in an attempt to disrupt the country’s peaceful environment.

In this context, Professor Dr. Sitesh Chandra Bachar, (Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka) gave a statement on behalf of the 150 teachers of the University of Dhaka.

He stated, “We wish peace to the souls of those killed in this barbaric incident and expressed our condolences to the family members. We Strongly condemn and protest against the most heinous incident against humanity”.

“We call on the government to find whoever is involved in such incidents through proper investigation bring them under the law and ensure exemplary punishment. It should also be investigated whether terrorists have indulged in such misdeeds on passengers to disrupt safe rail travel and take effective measures for the safety of passengers. We demand the government and law enforcement agencies take more strict measures to prevent such terrorism. At the same time, we call on the conscientious citizens of the country to come forward and protest against such barbaric and destructive activities, the briefing added.”

The university has called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice, ensure passenger safety, and prevent further acts of terrorism. They urge citizens to unite against such destructive activities and demand stricter measures to maintain a peaceful environment in the country through their signed statement.
