Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued a warning, stating that Bangladesh will face a return to darkness if her party, the Awami League, doesn’t remain in power. She made this statement while addressing a reception organized by the US chapter of the Awami League in Washington DC.

Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Washington DC followed her participation in the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session and included high-level meetings and engagements from September 17 to 22.

Critique of Past Government

Sheikh Hasina criticized the rule of the BNP-Jamaat governments, referring to it as an era of darkness. She claimed that these governments did little for the people and focused on their own wealth accumulation.

She criticized the BNP-Jamaat parties, labelling them as terrorist political parties, and accused them of undermining Bangladesh’s image globally through conspiracy and propaganda. She urged the countrymen to stay alert and not let anyone manipulate their fate.

The Prime Minister urged the US chapter of the Awami League to strengthen their communication with American congressmen, senators, and local government representatives, informing them about Bangladesh’s development and countering the falsehood and conspiracy of the BNP-Jamaat clique.

“Their (BNP-Jamaat clique) character is yet to change. So, they are out to undermine the country through hatching conspiracies and spreading propaganda,” she said, adding: “We have to give them a good reply showcasing the huge development works conducted by the Awami League across the country at home and abroad.

Achievements of Her Government

The Prime Minister highlighted the development undertaken by her government since 2009, emphasizing that it bridged the gap left by the previous administrations. She credited specific plans, continued democratic processes, and stability for Bangladesh’s recognition as a developing country.

She highlighted the transformation of Bangladesh into a developing nation and the ongoing efforts to turn it into a “Smart Bangladesh.”

Importance of the Next General Election

The Prime Minister emphasized the significance of the next general election for Bangladesh’s development. A committee has already been formed to create the election manifesto as part of their preparation.

She emphasized the Awami League’s historical role in fighting for the people’s rights, including the Language Movement, Six-Point Demand, and War of Liberation. She emphasized that the Awami League’s dedication to Bangladesh’s development sets it apart from other parties.

“The development of Bangladesh has been possible due to having the Awami League in power. Nobody else will work for the country’s development with such devotion and love. We want the advancement to be continued and none can hinder it,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina expressed her trust in the people of Bangladesh, stating that they believe the Awami League can change their fate and ensure sustainable development. She mentioned that the people of Bangladesh are her strength and that she considers them her family.

Future Plans for Development

Sheikh Hasina mentioned her government’s preparations to begin its journey as a developing nation in 2026. A committee, led by her Principal Secretary, has been formed to facilitate this journey. The Prime Minister discussed various planned initiatives, including providing homes to the landless and homeless, extending healthcare services through community clinics, and granting stipends to millions of students.

She reiterated her commitment to ensuring that no one in Bangladesh remains homeless or ultra-poor, emphasizing the government’s focus on development and prosperity.

She delivered these statements during her address at a reception hosted by the US chapter of the Awami League at the Holiday Express Inn Hotel in Washington DC, United States, on last Wednesday.
