In Pakistan, the growing intolerance towards such behavior reflects the collective efforts of women’s rights advocates and a call for a more inclusive and respectful society

Last week, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif faced unexpected and strong backlash after making derogatory remarks about female opposition leaders in parliament. This incident is just one of many instances of sexism witnessed in Pakistan, raising concerns about the leniency towards such behavior in society. However, this time, the opposition to Mr. Asif’s remarks was loud and widespread, reflecting a growing intolerance towards such behavior from all segments of society.

Unfortunately, Pakistan has witnessed a prevalence of sexist remarks from various individuals, including writers, cricketers, celebrities, and judges. Sharmila Faruqi, a member of the provincial assembly, highlighted in the local media that there is a concerning leniency towards men when it comes to escaping accountability for their sexist behavior.

Mr. Asif has a history of expressing such sentiments in parliament, as evidenced by a prior incident during a joint session where he used a derogatory term, ‘tractor trolley,’ to describe former federal minister Sheerin Mazari, making a crude reference to her weight.

This kind of language had been used in the legislative setting on numerous occasions previously. Under the leadership of Mr. Asif, both the PTI and the PML-N had consistently engaged in making derogatory and misogynistic remarks about female lawmakers from opposing parties.

A Sign of Change:

Sociologist Nida Kirmani highlights that the significant backlash against Mr. Asif’s discriminatory remarks signifies a sign of change in Pakistani society. Such forceful outcry might not have occurred a few years earlier, indicating evolving societal attitudes towards addressing sexism. Women’s rights advocates have played a crucial role in this transformation, leveraging the power of social media to amplify their voices.

Impact of Popular Culture:

Television plays a vital role in shaping societal attitudes, and many Pakistani women attribute regressive views to the portrayal of women in popular culture. While some TV programs have attempted to challenge stereotypes, they have faced resistance from censors and conservative elements.

A Call for Respect and Equality:

Actor and campaigner Adeel Afzal emphasizes the need for Pakistani society to acknowledge women as individuals with the right to live on their own terms. Moving forward, sustained critique and resistance are expected to dissuade politicians and individuals from making offensive remarks against women, paving the way for a more inclusive and respectful society.

Khawaja Muhammad Asif’s Political Career and Controversies:

As the Defence Minister of Pakistan, Khawaja Muhammad Asif holds a prominent position in Pakistani politics. His political journey has been marked by various controversies, including dual nationality allegations and disqualification from public office. However, his latest sexist remarks have drawn significant criticism from all corners of society. The widespread condemnation of Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s sexist remarks is a testament to the changing social attitudes in Pakistan. The growing intolerance towards such behavior reflects the collective efforts of women’s rights advocates and a call for a more inclusive and respectful society. As Pakistan progresses, it is crucial to continue challenging regressive views and promoting gender equality to ensure a more equitable and respectful future.
