Mohiuddin Bachchu, the candidate nominated by the Awami League and representing the boat symbol, secured victory in the by-election for the Chittagong-10 seat with an impressive 52,923 votes. His closest competitor, Samsul Alam, who ran as the Jatiya Party nominee, only managed to obtain 1,572 votes.
On Sunday night (July 30), Muhammad Hasanuzzaman, the Returning Officer of the Election, declared the election result at the MA Aziz Stadium Gymnasium in the city. The votes from 156 centers were counted to determine the outcome.
Last June 2 After the death of Chittagong-10 Member of Parliament Dr. Afsarul Amin, this seat became vacant.
Chittagong-10 Constituency consists of wards number 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 24, 25 and 26 of the city.
Stats of the vote
This year’s by-election saw a total of 488,638 eligible voters. The voting process took place in 1,251 rooms across 156 centers, utilizing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to accept the votes.
The election results reveal that Mohiuddin Bachchu, the Awami League candidate, secured 52,923 votes across the 156 polling stations. On the other hand, Samsul Alam, the Jatiya Party candidate, received 1,572 votes.
Apart from them, Deepak Kumar Palit (Sonali Ansh) from Trinamool BNP obtained 1,230 votes, Bangladesh Cultural Liberation Jot’s Rashid Mia (Chari) received 579 votes, independent candidate Md. Armaan Ali (Balloon) received 480 votes, and Manjurul Islam Bhuiyan (Rocket) obtained 369 votes.
How was the environment?
The election was conducted with the assistance of two judicial and eight executive magistrates. In addition, the security measures included the deployment of 4 platoons of BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh), 4 patrol teams of RAB (Rapid Action Battalion), and the police striking force.
Although there was no report of any controversial incidents the voter turnout was a mere 11.7%. According to Election Returning Officer Muhammad Hasanuzzaman, the results were declared following a peaceful polling process. The entire situation was closely monitored through CCTV cameras installed in each center, and fortunately, no adverse incidents were reported. Furthermore, none of the candidates raised any complaints regarding the election proceedings.
