Editor’s Note:
The role of culture defines a nation’s identity. Our language, lifestyle, literature, food, song, religious and moral values distinguish us in the footprints of human existence. In the rapidly changing reality of the globalised information era, we are finding obsoletion of the cultures we once relished during our childhood. Watching jatra was like history passing before your eyes. Listening to the songs of the bauls used to cleanse many a souls. The fun of going to village or town fair after eid or puja with our friends, brothers and sisters with different beliefs is disappearing.
One of the most iconic figures in Bangladesh’s cultural arena, Ramendu Majumdar noted that the middle-class was pivotal to culture in the post-liberation Bangladesh, but now that class has been caught up in the grips of consumerism. “Are we being detached from the spirit of the liberation war,” he questioned, “from the values of equality, justice, and non-communalism?”
A counterculture with influence from social media like Tiktok is taking over. Foreign cultures have also largely sneaked into our living rooms through the powers of satellite TV, Netflix and others. The influence of new cultures will always be present in the genesis of the younger generation. The necessity is to preserve the essence of our own culture in all of it. The threat against our cultural identity and its consequences has always bothered me personally. In our journey towards development as a nation we also must have utmost sincerity in preserving our cultural identity.
