Over the last 15 years, the field of information technology has witnessed the employment of over 600,000 individuals in IT freelancing. This sector comprises 300,000 professionals in the software industry, 50,000 in the hardware industry, 700,000 in business process outsourcing (BPO), 300,000 in e-commerce, and over 2 million young professionals engaged in ride-sharing, fintech, internet services, and similar domains.
The Bangladesh Computer Council, through its 7 regional centers, has provided training to a total of 35,600 individuals, including 10,400 women. This training, offered in 7 diploma/PGD and 26 short-term courses, has played a vital role in facilitating their placement in various workplaces.
Under the Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment, and Governance (LICT) project, 30,954 individuals have undergone training and secured employment through foundation and top-up initiatives. Specifically, the FIFL program within the LICT project has delivered training in Android, PHP, Web Intelligence and Big Data, Security, and Ethical Hacking, resulting in employment for 2,244 individuals.
Pioneering the Next Wave in Information Technology
The Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority has undertaken a comprehensive training initiative, impacting a total of 36 thousand individuals, of which more than 12 thousand are women. Within this cohort, over 28 thousand have successfully found employment in the Information Technology (IT) sector through ELICT (Employment of Learning ICT) projects.
To facilitate the effective utilization of capable individuals, a bespoke software solution named ‘Emporia’ (accessible at emporia.bcc.gov.bd/) has been meticulously crafted. The e-learning platform boasts 350 ICT-based audio-visual tutorials, along with an additional 60 audio tutorials catering specifically to the visually impaired.
As part of the ‘Empowering Rural Communities through the Unreached Union Information and Service Center’ project, 5,670 individuals have been equipped with the necessary skills to embark on entrepreneurial endeavors, spanning the country.
Furthermore, 57,600 members belonging to small indigenous communities have undergone skill development training. To extend the benefits of Digital Bangladesh, two Digital Service Employment & Training Centers (D-SET) have been established in these regions.
Digital Security Goes Nationwide
The ‘e-Gov CIRT’ project is actively providing training on various aspects of cybersecurity to a total of 5,187 government officials, which includes 1,450 personnel from law enforcement agencies.
A significant number of 3,025 government officials are undergoing comprehensive training on e-governance and Cyber Security, both domestically and internationally.
The ongoing ‘Digital Literacy Center Establishment’ initiative is impacting approximately 19,800 teachers from 8,327 educational institutions nationwide, equipping them with essential skills in digital literacy. Furthermore, the project has successfully enabled 1,37,382 students to complete digital literacy training courses and obtain corresponding certificates.
Through a collaborative endeavor involving the Digital Security Agency and the ITU program, a remarkable 1,23,000 individuals have completed online training programs. Simultaneously, workshops conducted in 187 schools across 8 divisions have effectively heightened awareness about cybersecurity among a substantial cohort of over 50,000 adolescent girls.
Elevating the Women and Specially-abled with Innovative Training
The training initiative known as ‘Office Applications & Unicode Bangla under Women in Development (WID)’ has successfully provided instruction to 2,481 individuals. Additionally, the ‘Women IT Frontier Initiative’ program has effectively trained 4,101 women entrepreneurs.
Within the framework of the project titled ‘Empowering Women through Technology’ under the ICT Department, a total of 10,500 women have received training across various categories, including Freelancers to Entrepreneurs, IT Service Providers, and Women Call Centre agents. Notably, 534 of the trained women have initiated their businesses, while 1,380 have secured employment.
Specially-abled individuals have been provided with special skills development and workplace opportunities, resulting in 904 of them gaining employment out of 5,000.
For visually impaired students in grades six through ten, digital educational resources have been developed. Additionally, low-cost devices such as multimedia talking books and readers have been facilitated for visually impaired individuals.
A challenge fund has been established to enhance website accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The ‘Empowerment of all types of Disabled Individuals through ICT’ project has successfully trained a total of 2,800 disabled individuals.
Ascendance of Online Education
The online educational platform ‘Kishor Batayon’ (konnect.edu.bd/) boasts an enrollment of over 2.7 million adolescents, encompassing both male and female students. These individuals have the opportunity to engage consistently in learning, drawing from an extensive collection of self-created and curated content, totaling over 38,000 pieces.
On the ‘Shikkhok Batayon’ platform (teachers.gov.bd), there are more than 770,000 multimedia classroom-appropriate content available. Approximately 620,000 educators utilize these resources to deliver lessons in the Bengali language on the expansive e-learning platform ‘Muktopaath’ (muktopaath.gov.bd). The platform has successfully registered around 465,000 trainees who have completed training from 282 courses, ultimately benefiting nearly 2,885,000 students.
The ‘Dokkhota Batayon’ initiative aims to centralize information on vocational training, including details on training providers, job updates, course descriptions, and more. Presently, it has registered over 300,000 young individuals, collaborating with 1,551 employers and 605 training centers.
